The Women of Roe Days

Many women founders of reproductive health startups in the U.S. are bracing up for battle as 26 states may face a near-total abortion ban post the November elections. Here are four cases of startup founders and their actions of battle.

Jannine Versi, the co-founder of menopausal service startup Elektra Health, said her company is trying to help teach other businesses how to support their employees’ abortion rights without worrying about geography or penalizing remote workers.

Versi expects more startups to begin working with grassroots organizations as politics and tech continue to intertwine.

Olivia Raisner has a similar mission. Coincidentally, Raisner co-founded the startup Mayday the same day Roe was overturned. Her goal is to establish a nationwide campaign to inform as many people as possible on how to access safe abortion pills through the mail, since it could be difficult to track pills shipped to a home address.

Raisner said her target is those who can’t afford to travel out of state to obtain abortion care.

Similarly, there’s Madison Campbell co-founder of Leda Health, a startup that provides medical services and home rape kits to survivors of sexual assault. One of her notable cases was a 10-year-old girl who was denied an abortion in Ohio and had to go to Indiana to get one. The is especially depressing when you realise that majority sexual assault women already don't get easy access to medical care.

Campbell wants to expand to every state in the nation as “fast as humanly possible” before the fall arrives.

Then there’s Michelle Kennedy, co-founder of maternity platform Peanut, who is using social media to host discussions for women to express their thoughts and concerns. Earlier women used period tracker apps to do this. But now, these apps have become a risky reference for women’s health issues since they can map data on a woman’s missed period and fertility days.

Fears that access to emergency contraception is under threat have also spread. Digital health startups are redirecting their marketing campaigns towards contraception. For example, Stix, a startup that sells pregnancy tests and ovulation kits, pivoted its marketing budget toward advertising its new morning after pill, Restart

Malaysia is known for being very big on digital technology and has been consistently ranked as one of the most promising emerging startup hubs in the world.

Finnish Sand-Silo

Finland has launched the world’s first battery made of sand. It could help ensure a steady supply of power to the country all year round. The sand battery was constructed by Finnish startup Polar Night Energy.

How it works:

  • Renewably generated electricity is converted into heat which is pumped into a silo filled with 100 tonnes of sand.
  • This heats the sand up to 500 degree celsius.
  • It can hold this temperature for months at a time.
  • This means that the battery can discharge hot air when energy prices are higher or during winter months to heat homes, offices, and the local swimming pool at a much lower cost.

This technology could also provide heat for industrial processes that today rely on fossil fuel energy.

The batteries can be up to hundreds of cubic metres in size. And can be built underground. The  battery has the capacity to store around 100 kW of heating power in addition to 8 MWh of energy storage.

Why is this needed?

Most large batteries today are made from lithium. But that is an expensive and scarce resource. And mining it carries a significant environment cost.

Potential Issues: The world going through a growing shortage of sand and acquiring tonnes of sand for a novice tech could potentially intensify this shortage. However, researches suggest this battery can be created using low-quality sand or even sand-like materials.

Inflation's Unexpected Dividend

As inflation eats away at the earnings of consumers and businesses, more are getting creative as a means of generating additional income.

According to a new survey from QuickBooks, up to 4 million Latino workers are thinking about taking the entrepreneurship plunge to help cope with record-high inflation.

Inflationary Dividend: The survey suggests that 15% of Latino and Hispanic respondents expressed interest in becoming an entrepreneur in 2022. A more recent QuickBooks survey even found that 44% of budding Latino entrepreneurs were hungry to add to their income stream by starting a business on top of their current job.

What the respondents said: The internet and new technologies, such as software and e-commerce, have created a conducive environment for launching new ventures.

Respondents specifically credit tech with easing the process of finding new customers, tapping into business-management tools, and accessing business advice. They add that digital technology has lowered startup costs and helped with removing language barriers as well.

132 Years to Equality

Globally the share of women is the workforce is at its lowest in 15 years. Gender parity in labour force participation stands at 62.9%. That means for every 100 men in the workforce, there are only 63 women.

According to analysis by the World Economic Forum (WEF), if we take into consideration the work trends from 2006 to 2020, the rate of change was such that it would take 100 years to close the gender gap. That is already incredibly long. But the pandemic made matters worse. Now it’s a 132 years until we get to parity.

Reasons:

The pandemic affected sectors where many women are employed such as retail and hospitality. School and nursery closures increased burden of parents, with the impact disproportionately suffered by women.

Mentality Issue:

While sectors like educations have more women in leadership roles, women in the engineering and manufacturing sectors are lagging behind. In fact, it seems, women are tending to acquire skills in fields that already employ a lot of women in order to avert career risks.
