You’re likely familiar with credit bureaus like Equifax, TransUnion and Experian, which compile the data used to generate your credit scores. But what you might not know is that there’s a large web of smaller, sneakier consumer reporting agencies tracking everything from when people rent a new home or change a job to when they miss a utilities payment or apply for health insurance. 

For Money’s August digital cover story, reporter Adam Hardy dove into what exactly these agencies are looking for… and what they do with the information they find. Adam pulled some reports on himself and — after a lengthy, tedious process — found documentation of everything from his previous salaries to the number of hours he worked at a part-time restaurant job in 2013. 

The story is eye-opening — and pretty scary when you consider just how much of your personal information is floating around without your knowledge.
