Hello there July 22 2022

Summer means many things: Beach holidays and BBQs, long days and short nights, dining al fresco... But more and more, summer is also associated with fire.

Wildfires and heat waves are increasingly common and widespread throughout the world as a result of the climate crisis. This week, Europe and the United Kingdom saw dramatic temperature swings and record-breaking heat. Fires forced people from their homes in the U.K., France, Spain, and elsewhere. The weather was so extreme, in fact, you could see it from space. Don't believe us? Scroll down and see it for yourself.

Webb Telescope reveals the oldest galaxy we've ever seen

During some of the James Webb Space Telescope’s first scientific observations, a team of astrophysicists just discovered the oldest galaxy ever observed, and it’s a cosmic surprise that challenges key ideas about what the early universe was like.

The galaxy, dubbed GLASS-z13, is 13.5 billion light years away and beats the previous record by about 100 million years.

Breaking down the new House of the Dragon trailer

Game of Thrones may feel a lifetime ago, but it’s only been a handful of years — the exact amount of time needed to craft a just as epic yet completely detached follow-up.

If you're out of the loop, House of the Dragon is a 10-episode series premiering August 21 on HBO that follows the Targaryen empire at their peak.

This new trailer contains all the hallmarks you’d expect. The Iron Throne features throughout, as do dragons. And while the juicy political intrigue abounds, it also offers a sneak peak at one of the most important locales in Westeros history.

Here's everything we learned.

Satellite images reveal the scale of Europe's heat wave

Most of the Northern Hemisphere is sizzling right now. In Portugal alone, at least 1,000 deaths have been linked to deadly heat this past week.

To understand the sheer scale of how hot the Northern Hemisphere is this month, it can help to see things from space.

Satellites like the ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel-3 and NOAA’s Suomi-NPP have captured the brutal temperatures and proliferating wildfires from high above the Earth this month.

This 365-million-year-old fish fossil reveals how life came to land

Researchers from the University of Chicago and Drexel University recently published a study in the journal Nature in which they describe a new species of fish that may have preceded the species that eventually made it to land.

“It’s really rare to find an animal like this,” co-author Tom Stewart tells Inverse. “It's also exciting because some of the anatomy is unexpected.”

According to Stewart, this fossil has great pecs.
