It’s no secret that Star Wars movies are in a bit of slump, but if one person can fix the problem, it’s probably Lawrence Kasdan. The legendary screenwriter behind Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and more recently spoke to Inverse about his new Disney+ docuseries, Light & Magic, which goes behind the scenes with the equally legendary special effects studio. But when asked if he’d consider spinning off Solo into a streaming series, Kasdan firmly declared that he’s much more interested in a proper movie sequel. Is Solo 2 the blockbuster Lucasfilm has been searching for?

Before Raiders of the Lost Ark had even begun production, George Lucas asked the young screenwriter Lawerence Kasdan to turn around and write The Empire Strikes Back.

It’s one of those movie-making factoids that seems impossible to believe: the idea George Lucas would have handed over the keys to both of his fledgling franchises to an up-and-coming screenwriter with only two previous feature film credits. And when you talk to Lawerence Kasdan in 2022, he laughs and shakes his head. Over four decades later, even he can’t believe it.

Tom Holland's MCU return

One of the most impressive things about Spider-Man: No Way Home is how it manages to serve as a second origin story for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.

Not only does No Way Home strip Holland’s Peter of his most powerful connections, but it also turns him into a poor, inventive kid. By the time No Way Home is over, the MCU’s Peter Parker is closer than he’s ever been to the version of Spider-Man that fans have come to know and love in the comics.

Now, even though Marvel chose not to make any references to Spider-Man during its recent San Diego Comic-Con panel, it sounds like the studio plans to stick to the promise it made at the end of No Way Home.

Marvel has a unique plan for the Fantastic Four

Marvel fans may want to reset their expectations for Fantastic Four.

The Phase 6 film is one of the most anticipated movies Marvel Studios has in development. Following Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Fantastic Four will be the first MCU project to use some of the superheroes previously under Fox’s control. Couple that fact with the Fantastic Four’s status as one of Marvel’s most beloved superhero teams, and it’s not hard to see why there’s so much excitement surrounding a standalone movie about them.

JWST may have just found its first supernova

Astronomers spotted something unusual happening in a distant galaxy in recent images from the James Webb Space Telescope — something that wasn’t there when Hubble last looked at the same galaxy.

"We suspect it's a supernova," astronomer Mike Engesser of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) tells Inverse. Finding short-lived cosmic events like supernovae isn’t what Webb was designed to do, but the newly-operational space telescope seems to be full of surprises. And this one could open the door for looking for the death throes of the universe's first generations of massive stars.

The US monkeypox surge, explained

On Saturday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox virus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern; the seventh time it has used its highest-alarm designation since its creation in 2005.

While endemic in many countries in Central and West Africa, cases of monkeypox aren’t often found in high numbers outside those areas. When they are, cases are usually traced back to one of those locales. However, the outbreaks health officials have been monitoring since May of this year haven’t followed a similar pattern and case rates appear to be soaring. When Inversefirst reported on Monkeypox in June, there were 33 confirmed cases of Monkeypox in the United States. As of Wednesday, the CDC data shows the number has now jumped to 4,639.

“If things continue at this rate, it’s not hard to see how we might have a monkeypox crisis in this country come Labor Day,” Donald Alcendor, Adjunct Associate Professor of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, tells Inverse.
