Catastrophic flash flooding kills 25 in Kentucky and at least a dozen missing.
The Guardian (Moderate Left) • Factual Grade 79% • 3 min read

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said he expected the death toll to continue to rise and warned officials still could not reach certain areas. At least 33,000 people now have no electricity and mudslides have made roads impassable. The Kentucky flooding came days after rainfall in the St Louis region of Missouri was hit with a foot of rain.
    ...
Beshear also said that it would probably take years for communities affected by the flooding to rebuild again, with the deluge coming less than a year since the southern part of the state was strafed by late-season tornados that killed 70. Joe Biden on Friday approved a disaster declaration to allow federal assistance to be channeled to the state.
    ...
While the global climate crisis cannot be held directly responsible for most individual weather events, it does make the likelihood and frequency of catastrophic events much more common. Bill Haneberg, a climate expert and the state’s geologist, said this rainfall event is “extraordinary” for Kentucky.

Does the US need a third political party?

804 votes, 131 comments

Context: Andrew Yang announces launch of "Forward" party.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - The-two party system often forces us to vote for the lesser of two evils. Having more than two parties will eventually force each party to put up better nominees. I say eventually because it will take time, there is no quick fix to the system. If voters actually vote for who they want as opposed to voting against someone, “I voted for Trump because I didn’t want Hillary” or “I voted for Biden because I didn’t want trump”, the parties will quickly see the votes dwindling from their party/candidates and hopefully see the need to put forward real candidates. This may take one, two, or even three Presidential elections, but the alternative is to stay in the divisive rut we are. We need to start looking at the long game.
