Ernie Bushmiller's comic about a mischievous eight-year-old is almost 100 years old and better than ever

Like many good things in my life, Nancy came to me on Tumblr. I forget the specifics of which account posted it, who reblogged it into my dashboard — it must have been well over a decade ago now — but I remember which comic it was exactly.

In many ways this is the quintessential Nancy cartoon. The premise is simple: Nancy, a round little 8-year-old with dark hair and a stout frame, is misbehaving. Nancy is almost always misbehaving. She encroaches on the boundaries of a new handsome boy next door. He rejects her, and in an act of bizarre genius (or insane problem solving), she starts spying on him through a snowman. It’s possible the joke here feels “random,” though keen readers will note the setup that is the snow on the ground in the second panel. And what a line on the phone! “I’m not staring at you — I don’t even know you’re ALIVE!” How intense, how panicked Nancy must be, to not only deflect the accusation, but turn it around on the boy completely. It’s sweet, it’s absurd, it’s imbued with humility and silliness. It’s Nancy.

I love Nancy, especially when she is pulsing with childlike rage and embarrassment. I have her face tattooed on my arm, that incredible expression of anger and ire the most meaningful mark on my body. Continue reading

Kathy Hilton, mother of Paris Hilton, is not a normal person. Watch any appearance she has made on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and you will notice a certain je ne sais huh? This woman isn’t quite right. Most of the time, it’s pretty funny! Like when Sutton was crying and Kathy asked “Who is hunky dory?”

I want to smooch my new king

Until today, if asked, I would have told you that the three cutest babies on the planet were as follows:

1. Little Prince G (Oh, my cakes!)

2. The little girl in glasses that comes toodlin’ into frame while her dad is giving an interview in that viral BBC video. Around these parts, we just call her “She Dancin,’” because she dancin’.

3. The stunning first photo of Lilibet Jr. proudly on display in the Queen’s office, exclusively sourced by our friends at Page Six.

But then I got a load of a photo set of Hunter Biden and Melissa Cohen’s two-year-old child Beau en route to Kiawah Island in South Carolina with his equally youthful grandpop, Mr. President.
