I know, I know, another digest about disgraced former president Donald Trump: but he’s just so…guilty! Of so many crimes!
-
After Attorney General Merrick Garland called Trump’s bluff yesterday by saying the Justice Department would seek to make the FBI search warrant used at Mar-a-Lago public, Trump snapped back with a response of his own saying he wouldn’t oppose it, as if he had nothing to hide! Maybe he learned his lesson after losing the fight to conceal his tax records, but probably not. Trump world finally leaked the warrant and property receipt and it shows that the FBI took tons of shit, much of it highly classified. Agents recovered a trove of top-secret and other records that belong to the federal government.
-
It also shows that the FBI is investigating three felony crimes, including a potential violation of the Espionage Act. Haven’t heard about that one in a while! Documents accompanying the search warrant showed that investigators were hunting for “illegally possessed” items including “any physical documents with classification markings” and any presidential records or those relating to the government from Trump's time in office, in addition to any evidence of the “knowing alteration, destruction or concealment of any government and/or Presidential records, or of any documents with any classification markings.”
-
The search warrant and property receipt were released late this afternoon. The written inventory says the FBI took about 20 boxes of items from Mar-a-Lago including photo binders, information about French President Emmanuel Macron, and a variety of classified material explicitly labeled Top Secret. Without more specificity we can't say for sure but the information is consistent with theft of nuclear secrets. Plus Trump world has been fixated on selling nuclear tech to the Saudis for years. Of course, Trump baselessly called the nuclear secrets issue a “hoax” and suggested the FBI planted evidence, and he’s such an honest guy we should probably take him at his word.

Don’t worry: The right wing is, as always, playing it super cool
-
Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich said the FBI’s move was “not just unprecedented, but unnecessary -- and now they are leaking lies and innuendos to try to explain away the weaponization of government against their dominant political opponent. This is outrageous.” On his scam social-media site Truth Social, Trump complained, acted like he would never oppose the release of the warrant, and made the false claim that Obama “kept 33 million pages of documents, much of them classified.” The National Archives and Records Administration immediately corrected the record in a statement detailing that they obtained “exclusive legal and physical custody” of all of Obama’s records when he left office in 2017, and that 30 million pages Trump referenced were unclassified documents that were transferred to a NARA facility in Chicago, where NARA still has full custody of them. You know, like what happens when the president isn’t a criminal.
-
Trump’s most loyal sycophants have taken to Fox News and social media to air their grievances about leaks and all manner of unrelated issues surrounding the FBI investigation into their most special favorite man, ignoring the whole potential nuclear espionage situation staring them in the face. Among Trump’s civilian supporters, there has also been a horrifying uptick in extremist rhetoric and threats of violence.
His puppet Budowich inadvertently got one thing right: Donald Trump is America’s dominant political opponent. Trump didn’t invent the homegrown fascism and resulting violence he has helped foment, they existed long before his political ascendance, but he is their nucleus. It's now Trump vs. America, there’s no straddling the line anymore.

Bestselling author Salman Rushdie was attacked onstage and stabbed in the neck while giving a lecture in Chautauqua, NY, today. A bloodied Rushdie, 75, was flown to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known. His agent said the writer is undergoing surgery, but had no additional details to give. An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man confront Rushdie on stage as he was being introduced at the Chautauqua Institution and punch or stab him 10 to 15 times. The man was arrested, but authorities did not immediately identify the attacker or offer any information about his motive. Rushdie’s 1988 novel The Satanic Verses drew death threats from Iran’s leaders and islamic extremists who viewed the work as blasphemous. Around the world, often-violent protests erupted against Rushdie, who was born in India to a Muslim family. At least 45 people were killed in riots over the book, including 12 people in Rushdie’s hometown of Mumbai. In 1991, a Japanese translator of the book was stabbed to death and an Italian translator survived a knife attack. In 1993, the book’s Norwegian publisher was shot three times and survived. The book was banned in Iran, where the late leader Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death. Khomeini died that same year.

Two years after former NFL players sued the league over the treatment of Black retirees in the organization’s $1 billion concussion settlement, hundreds of men whose medical tests for dementia were rescored to eliminate race bias now also qualify for monetary compensation. A 2020 lawsuit unearthed the horrifying fact that dementia tests had previously been adjusted by race according to a framework that assumed that Black people have a lower cognitive-baseline score. Of the 646 Black men whose tests were rescored, nearly half now qualify for dementia awards.
