7 steps how a $1.8B company started

HelloFresh went from $0 to $1.8B in just 6 years.

The hardest part about these billion-dollar stories is always how they started.

1. Patrick Drake worked in financial law and hated it.

2. He always loved cooking and decided to turn this passion into a full-time business.

3. He learned as much as he could about food online, he also secretly worked in kitchens at lunchtime and after work, for free, just to learn.

4. He noticed a concept – a recipe food-box idea – that focused on the family market in Sweden.

5. He raised seed capital, with the idea of adapting it for the UK market, concentrating on young, busy couples.

6. His team dressed up in carrot costumes and ran around Waterloo station handing out fliers.

7. Within 2 weeks they had their first customers. They packed bags in Patrick's living room and hand-delivered the bags via the London Underground – getting money and instant feedback, which shaped the product.
