Louder: Blondie on the Music That Defined Its Legacy

Blondie’s first authorized boxed set has arrived, providing Rob Tannenbaum a wonderful reason to speak with the always quotable Debbie Harry and Chris Stein (and some of their very eloquent admirers). For Harry, “the lead singer of Blondie” was a character she invented, “which spoke of what was acceptable for girls at that time, and the way I had steered myself through life, having a certain facade,” she said. “It was the same thing David Bowie did.”

A few more notable profiles this week: Jewly Hight interviewed the country singer-songwriter Ingrid Andress, whose career has been a series of fortunate stumbles into scenarios where she could then make following-her-gut decisions. And Jim Farber met up with Tommy McLain, the 82-year-old swamp-pop musician who has waited more than four decades — and endured a few death-defying situations — to make the album that came out this week (with a little help from Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe).

Jon Caramanica and Lindsay Zoladz went to the first two nights of Harry Styles’s 15-concert run at Madison Square Garden, which was heavier on Styles the showman than Styles the musician. Jon also hosted a conversation about Rage Against the Machine on Popcast, and Jon Pareles wrote about Britney Spears and Elton John’s duet “Hold Me Closer.”

Joe Coscarelli reported on an usual story, about Capitol ending its relationship with a virtual “robot rapper,” FN Meka, after critics said the project was built on stereotypes.

And I caught Billy Joel’s wonderful-as-always monthly residency at the Garden (Harry had to make room for the house band), where Olivia Rodrigo — who had sung about a Joel song — popped in as a special guest, singing the song in question (“Deja Vu”) and joining Joel for the song it referenced (“Uptown Girl”). Meta! And truly delightful.
