“Is the media prepared for an extinction-level event?”

The Intercept is determined to avoid the fate of outlets like Gawker, Vice News, and BuzzFeed News, all of which have closed down entirely.

Earlier this year, the New Yorker described the 2,681 layoffs across the media industry in 2023 as an “extinction-level event” affecting outlets as varied as NBC News, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Vox, Business Insider, and the New Yorker’s own publisher, Conde Nast.

The Intercept is determined to avoid the fate of outlets like Gawker, Vice News, and BuzzFeed News, all of which have closed down entirely. But we’re not immune to the industry trends — and sadly, that includes our own recent round of layoffs.

The good news is that there’s a reason The Intercept has so far avoided the catastrophic fate of so many news outlets: Tens of thousands of generous readers like you who are enthusiastic enough about independent journalism to chip in whatever they can afford.

Sometimes, these donations come in a sudden wave of grassroots outrage over a headline-grabbing injustice, like Israel’s war on Gaza. But we can’t budget based on such unusual moments.

That’s why we rely so heavily on a small number of committed monthly donors to provide a predictable and reliable base of support. Our best hope for becoming financially sustainable is to reach this month’s goal of adding 3,000 more sustaining members or else face a devastating shortfall in an all-important election year.

If you support The Intercept’s one-of-a-kind investigative journalism, will you take the next step and become a monthly donor to ensure it continues for years to come?
