What’s the minimum salary you’d require to accept a new job offer?

For Americans, the magic number is $73,000 a year, according to a recent survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

This number is up 6% from the same period a year ago, which is keeping in line with the general upward trajectory of almost every livelihood factor in the past few months. 

Reasons for the high expectations

They’re definitely not greedy demands. For one, inflation is driving up the cost of living: Last month, consumer prices were up 8.5% from the same period a year ago.

Meanwhile, the labor market in the U.S. remains tight, with 528,000 new jobs added in July. Ideally, this should mean that workers have a higher bargaining power in the market.

But the Fed survey data also suggests that plenty of workers are on the hunt for new gigs: nearly 25% of respondents said they’d been searching for a new job in the last four weeks, the highest since March 2014. So technically, workers don’t have all that power in the market after all. 

However, despite this uptick, workers aren’t open to compromising on salary.

Construction of new homes has slowed as builders grow more worried about a drop in demand because of higher mortgage rates. Housing starts, or the start of construction on a new residential housing unit, fell to 1.45 million in July, according to Census Bureau data. That was a 9.6% decline from the month before. 

Building new houses takes a while. even if the demand for homes starts increasing now, the supply of homes may not be able to catch up as quickly. And so fewer homes will inevitably raise the prices even further.

Builder confidence also fell in August for the eighth straight month as builders struggled to deal with lower demand for homes and higher construction costs because of ongoing supply-chain issues, according to a survey from the National Association of Home Builders.
