Florida accounted for all but four of the fatalities, with 42 tallied in Lee County, which bore the brunt of the storm when it made landfall. Lee County officials have faced questions over whether they mandated evacuations in time. The chairman of the county's board of commissioners said that once the county was forecast to be in the cone, evacuation orders were given. Even then, some people chose to ride the storm out, [he] said.

Satellite images showed beach cottages and a motel that lined the shores of Florida's Sanibel Island [a popular tourist getaway that was home to some 6,000] had been demolished by storm surges. The island's link to the mainland was severed by breaches to its causeway bridge, further complicating recovery efforts, [said Sanibel's city manager].

More than 700,000 businesses and homes remained without power on Sunday afternoon in Florida. Insurers braced for between $28 billion and $47 billion in claims from what could amount to the costliest Florida storm since 1992, according to analytics company CoreLogic.

Should states supercede local governments to boost housing production?

363 votes, 33 comments

Context: New California laws will let developers bypass local govs in turning unused commercial buildings to housing units.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - States can create an environment that incentivizes more housing; they can also act to discourage immigration (which is factually a major cause of the shortage of affordable homes) but cannot and should not force a community to build more - in most cases, the very reason a person chose to live in a certain community was its neighborhood, space and character. If a state is going to force that community to change, then it owes that local community some kind of compensation for the impact.

Yes - Basically, I don't like NIMBYism because it allows people to exert their will over property that they do not own. It's a huge flaw in democracy; the majority can simply screw over a minority...

Unsure - How severe is the housing shortage in that particular locale? In what way is the state "superseding" the local government? Just forcing them to use abandon...
