Ian swamps southwest Florida, trapping people in homes.
Associated Press (Center) • Factual Grade 70% • 4 min read

The hurricane’s center made landfall near Cayo Costa, a barrier island just west of heavily populated Fort Myers. The Category 4 storm slammed the coast with 150 mph (241 kph) winds. Ian’s strength at landfall tied it for the fifth-strongest hurricane when measured by wind speed to strike the U.S. More than 2 million Florida homes and businesses were without electricity. Nearly every home and business in three counties was without power.
    ...
Hours after landfall, top sustained winds had dropped to 105 mph (170 kph), making it a Category 2 hurricane. Still, storm surges as high as 6 feet (2 meters) were expected on the opposite side of the state. Though expected to weaken to a tropical storm as it marches inland, Ian’s hurricane force winds were likely to be felt well into central Florida.
    ...
2.5 million people were ordered to evacuate southwest Florida before Ian hit, but by law no one could be forced to flee. The federal government sent 300 ambulances with medical teams and was ready to truck in 3.7 million meals and 3.5 million liters of water once the storm passes.

How much does your opinion on student debt cancellation depend on its fiscal impact?

483 votes, 65 comments

Context: New report says Biden's student debt cancellation will cost more than White House initially estimated.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Little - Student loans should not be cancelled, period. While the fiscal impact does matter and shifts the costs of borrowing from the borrower to society at large, many of whom are unfairly hit because they have either paid back their loans or did not go to college. The key issue here is that competent adults entered into these loans knowing they would have to pay them back. Unless the argument is the Federal Government fraudulently induced borrowers to take out these loans, borrows have a moral and legal obligation to pay back their debt obligations.
