Our highest purpose is that we were all born into this time and space. This is not going to repeat itself. The people who are here are meant to be here.”

To preserve our ancestral traditions and cultural identity, we must do the opposite of keeping them frozen in amber, but instead stay open to their evolution through practice, play, and creativity. Mary Anne Quiroz founded and runs the organization Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center, a space for practicing indigenous arts, culture, and activism. In her talk for CreativeMornings/Minneapolis, she shares how she performs traditional Mexican Aztec dance to express solidarity with activists like those protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. Quiroz also shares advice on how to organize and collaborate intergenerationally, seeking the wisdom of elders and making resources and networks abundantly available to youth. Watch the charismatic Mary Anne Quiroz delight in the possibilities of activating our cultural heritage.
