​How committing to 100 newsletter editions has changed my life

— all thanks to a podcast.

It was August 2020. I didn’t know what I was doing.

Feeling desperate, I rebooted an old Twitter account on a whim.

I started following the #MoneyTwitter crowd. I started tweeting platitudes and joining engagement groups — pretending to be someone and something I was not.

Exhibit A (from November 2020):

But all that began to change when I caught an episode of the Danny Miranda Podcast. He’d just launched the show and I was fortunate enough to stumbled up on it. I couldn’t be more grateful to have found it, to be honest.

It was the inflection point that has transformed my life.

That sounds dramatic. But hear me out. Two pivotal things occurred:

1. Danny interviewed my ‘Big 5’: Dickie Bush, Nicolas Cole, Steph Smith, Khe Hy, and Tim Stoddart (all within 6 weeks of each other!) — and I was eating these interviews up. Danny’s pod was my gateway drug to the digital/content creator world.

2. Danny’s only podcast goal was to put in 100 reps: he vowed not to quit the podcast until he hit 100 episodes.

​Danny’s story is only heating up. More on that in a bit.

But this is where the Growth Currency⚡ story begins.

Danny’s commitment to 100 episodes was wildly inspirational. I was jealous. Not of what he was doing, but that he had a mission and a goal.

I wanted that. So I made it happen.

⚡ What I learned from James Clear on list building by Brennan Dunn

My take: Brennan covers some key points, but the main takeaway is to publish your newsletter—in some form—on your website. That's what James did (paraphrased):

1. Write quality emails that help people
2. Send them out regularly
3. Republish on your site as blog post/article; encourage readers to share blog version
4. Syndicate on other websites that have a readership and publish others' content [as I recommended last week]
5. Share links to your blog posts in forums, comment threads, twitter replies, etc
6. Make it super obvious they should subscribe to your newsletter

My take: Paid newsletters are top of mind for me because well, I'm considering a paid newsletter (or keeping a portion of this newsletter behind a paywall—but is that different enough?). I admire Josh's perspective here because he's spot on. I hope it helps you as it's guiding me.

Thanks for making it to the end—I try and save some personal ramblings for this space.

We don't water our lawn during summer.

To no surprise, it dies. But it usually comes back. Except last year. It got cooked bad. Real bad.

And all the rain in the world couldn't resuscitate it back to life.

So we tilled the hell out of our yard. We tore up all the dead grass and weeds.

Then spread some fresh, new seed—and gave it some water.

And wouldn't you know it...

Sometimes it's okay to let projects die. Some can't—and shouldn't—be saved. Till the hell out of 'em.

Pour energy into something new. A new seed of an idea. Water it with some passion and patience.

See what grows.
