Design Argumentation - Gestalt Argumentation

#Learning the Gestalt principles to reinforce your design is a must, since “Gestalt is not a combination of elements but something new in relation to these, which exists together in their combination, but it distinguishable” (Lyons, 2011).

This is not a Product Design Course, this is more centered on giving you little tips to defend your design ;). If you want to learn more about Gestalt, you can visit 01.01. Introduction to design. Elements and fundamentals

As this is not a course, you can visit the link above and study the Gestalt with some Vanseo Design and do the next exercise.

Gestalt - Design Argumentation Exercise #1:

Explore the internet, design repositories or even your designs and find one good and one bad examples of:

  • Law of Figure/Ground
  • Law of Similarity
  • Law of Unity
  • Law of Continuity
  • Law of Closure
  • Law of Proximity
  • Law of Common Fate
  • Law of Focal Point
  • Law of Prägnanz

Gestalt - Design Argumentation Exercise #2:

Write one or two sentence of why those examples are good or bad. Be as concise as possible.

Example: The Google Search bar is a good example of law of Proximity because the full container has a light grey outline that enclosure the three main elements: the search icon, the microphone to start search by voice, and the magnifier glass icon to search. These elements are perceived as the same because of the Law of Closure, but speaking about the Proximity, thanks to the paddings associated with the outline, we can see that those elements are just one and the function are all related”.

The de-facto industry benchmarking report of DesignOps.

DesignOps Report

This is a short series about failures I've seen or made in the design system space. It is not about self-pity or drama, and it is not reproachful. It is a list of insights (hindsights, even) on two and a half years spent working on design systems, one of which was spent in a dedicated team. Its aim is to help you avoid my mistakes, and to remind me of them later on.

I do not remember exactly how I came across “Just Enough Research” and why I decided to read it. Perhaps, the name resonated with me after I learned about so-called JBGE (just barely good enough) analysis artifacts from Scott Ambler.
