Design Argumentation - Dot & Line Argumentation

Next in this series we have the two most common elements, the dot and the line. How can we defend the use of them? Let’s build some vocabulary:

The three main uses of dots:

  • The minimum element
  • A focused attention
  • Focal points in our compositions
  • Focal point between two dots (more distance between them, less emphasis)

The three more common line types are:

  • Contour lines: define the edges
  • Dividing lines: divide elements and contour ones
  • Decoration ones: self explanatory

The different meanings based on their shape are:

  • Thin lines: fragility, easy to break, elegancy, delicates
  • Thick lines: Though, strength, emphasis, a statement
  • Horizontal: stable, rest, asleep, calm, quiet, relaxed
  • Vertical: energy, strong, accentuate height, lack of movement
  • Diagonal: unbalanced, uncontrolled, tension, dramatic
  • Curved: predictable, fluid movement, dynamic
  • Zigzag: excitement, intense movement, confusion, nervousness

Line & Dot - Design Argumentation Exercise #1:

Inside https://www.uxdatabase.io/, identify the three different types of lines. Two examples per type.

Line & Dot - Design Argumentation Exercise #2:

Do the same but with shapes, identify at least four types of shapes and explain
their meaning in their context.
