The GIST - You’re hot then you’re cold
From The Gist Team
Missed you!
Hope you had a wonderful weekend, whether you spent it watching Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the season finale of Love Is Blind, all of the sports…or all of the above.
- Now that we’re rested and recharged (or still reeling thanks to Bartise), let’s start the week off right with the latest sports news.

Quote of the Day |
He has to show people that he’s sorry. What’s important — and what people miss — is he only apologized after he was suspended.
— Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai, when asked about Kyrie Irving’s ongoing suspension for promoting an antisemitic film and book last month. Accountability? What a concept. |

⚽️ USWNT: Pause the panic
The GIST: The USWNT saw (their own former players’) tweets about their recent struggles, and they took that personally, avoiding the wrong kind of history with yesterday’s 2–1 friendly win over Germany. Phew.
The matches: The chatter started following Thursday’s disappointing 2–1 loss to the German side. Defensive miscues, unlucky bounces and failed conversion of their offensive chances resulted in the USWNT dropping their third straight match, their longest losing streak since 1993.
- But they responded in a big way yesterday, rallying from an early 1–0 deficit thanks to two second-half goals — one from forward (and reigning NWSL MVP) Sophia Smith and the other from forward Mal Pugh.
- Goalie Alyssa Naeher also played hero, making a late game-changing save to help the squad avoid their first four-game losing streak…ever.
Zooming out: Ending their 2022 slate with a win is more than welcome, but questions remain, especially with the World Cup kicking off next July. The team’s young core is still finding their footing on the international stage while the midfield has looked noticeably disjointed in the squad’s losses.
- Meanwhile, the rest of the world continues to improve as they set their sights on toppling the two-time defending world champs. Buckle up.
🏈 NFL need to know: Week 10
The GIST: Just like these pigeons hanging out on the field, enjoy this bird’s-eye view of the biggest moments from Week 10.
Never much love when they go OT: Our jaws are still on the floor after watching the Minnesota Vikings take down the Buffalo Bills 33–30 in overtime. With time expiring, the Bills literally fumbled away their chance to secure the regulation win while Vikings wide receiver (WR) Justin Jefferson dazzled, hauling in the catch of the year en route to the Minnesota dub.
Guten tag: A change of scenery certainly helped quarterback (QB) Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who, despite Tom’s slip, held on to beat the red-hot Seattle Seahawks 21–16 in the NFL’s first regular season game hosted in Germany. International love.
Beginner’s luck: After a week of discussion about his controversial hiring, Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday led Indy to a dub in his pro coaching debut, as the Colts defeated the (admittedly very bad) Las Vegas Raiders 25–20.
Monday Night Football: The undefeated Philadelphia Eagles host the problematic Washington Commanders in an all–NFC East battle tonight at 8:15 p.m. ET. With the Eagles flying high and the Commanders ownership flying too close to the sun, expect Philly to come out on top.
⚽ Cards in the box
The GIST: The World Cup is less than a week away (!!!) but we’re starting the party early with soccer trading cards from Topps. No red cards (or red flags) here.
The details: Legends are made on the beautiful game’s biggest stage. Topps ensures those memorable moments aren’t lost in the shuffle.
- And they know that starting a new hobby can be intimidating. That’s why they teamed up with us to bring all collectors into the game. With Topps, starting your trading card collection is easier than learning the latest TikTok dance. Trust.

⛳ LPGA
A trio of Americans made the podium at the Pelican Women’s Championship in Belleair, Florida, this weekend. Nelly Korda hoisted the trophy, regaining her No. 1 ranking in the process, while Lexi Thompson and Allisen Corpuz rounded out the top three. Only stars and stripes are allowed at this par-tee.
🎓🏈 NCAA football
While the four undefeated teams — No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 TCU — maintained their streaks (and their top 25 rankings), it was all about the upsets. Then–No. 24 Washington topped then–No. 6 Oregon, while Vanderbilt snapped their 26-game SEC losing skid with a last-minute-touchdown against Kentucky on Saturday.
🏎 F1
Mercedes’ George Russell earned his first career F1 win at the São Paulo Grand Prix yesterday, speeding across the finish line just 1.5 seconds ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. As for previously dominant Red Bull? Continued course quarrels left Max Verstappen outside the top five. Drama.
🏀 WNBA
On Friday, the Indiana Fever won the first pick in the WNBA’s Draft Lottery for the first time in franchise history. Even better for Fever fans? The presumed top selection is reigning Naismith Player of the Year, South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston.
