Trump Launches 2024 Bid

Former President Donald Trump last night announced his 2024 presidential run, marking his third bid for the White House. The campaign launch comes one week after midterm elections in which Democrats retained control of the Senate, while Republicans have inched to within one seat of retaking a majority in the House. Grover Cleveland is the only US president who has been elected to two nonconsecutive terms, in 1884 and 1892.

Trump’s anticipated bid has received pushback from several in the GOP after a number of his endorsed candidates lost high-stakes races in swing states, particularly in Senate and gubernatorial contests. Some allies also reportedly lobbied Trump to postpone an announcement until after a Dec. 6 Senate runoff in Georgia between Raphael Warnock (D) and Trump-backed Herschel Walker (R).

Ongoing probes also loom over the new campaign, including into the handling of sensitive White House documents after leaving office, though it is unclear which, if any, would lead to indictments. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who won reelection by a wide margin, is viewed as a top competitor to Trump, though DeSantis has made no public indications of his 2024 aspirations.

Separately, House Republicans, in a closed-door meeting, endorsed Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R, CA-23) as speaker. McCarthy, who received 188 votes from his caucus, must win 218 votes from the full chamber in January to become speaker.

Stray Strike in Poland

Two people were killed yesterday when a missile landed in Poland, a NATO member,  prompting a security crisis meeting in Warsaw. The strike set off alarms within NATO member countries and came as Russia renewed its broad attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, its largest one-day missile barrage to date.

Polish officials claimed the missile was Russian-made; Russia denied any involvement. As of early this morning, preliminary reports suggest the explosion may have been linked to Ukrainian defenses attempting to knock down incoming Russian missiles.

At least 85 air-to-surface cruise missiles damaged power plants throughout Ukraine yesterday, with dozens successfully intercepted by air defense units. The attacks took place as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for peace at this week's G-20 summit in Bali during a virtual speech.

The latest attack followed Ukraine's recapture of Kherson late last week. Russia has ceded over half of the territory it gained since February, while sabotaging key infrastructure as its forces retreat.

Artemis 1 Blasts Off

NASA's Artemis 1 rocket successfully lifted off this morning in the agency's fourth attempt to launch the uncrewed spacecraft for a 1.3-million-mile mission around the moon and back to Earth.

The $4.1B mission, a combination of the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft (see 101), was initially scheduled to launch in August but was delayed by technical issues and Hurricanes Ian and Nicole. It marks the first use of the SLS and is seen as a precursor to possible human travel farther into space. The mission will take 25 days, primarily due to the moon's position—the solar-powered spacecraft cannot be in the moon's shadow for longer than 90 minutes or it risks losing power. See what's on board the spacecraft here.

Artemis 2, scheduled for 2024, will send a crewed vehicle on the same flyby, while Artemis 3 is tentatively set to return humans to the moon's surface in 2025.
