Today we’re listening to Mal Waldron, an American jazz pianist from New York City. Waldron started playing jazz in New York in the ‘50s, accompanying the likes of Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, and Billie Holiday.¹ In the ‘60s, a psychological injury cost him his musical abilities, prompting a move to Europe to work on recovering them. While Waldron would eventually pass away in 2002, just this past September, the label Tompkins Square released a newly discovered 1978 recording of a solo piano performance in Grenoble, France. It’s a sprawling collection of sinuous, dramatic pieces which showcase Waldron’s idiosyncratic style. Searching in Grenoble: The 1978 Solo Piano Concert (Live) - Mal Waldron (110m, no vocals) Have a great Thursday. 1 via NPR |
