From its dazzling visuals, to its nail-biting action, to its more potent environmental message, Avatar: The Way of Water is in a league of its own — and may just be one of Cameron's best movies.

Physicists achieve a "holy grail" of nuclear fusion

Last week, the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory made nuclear fusion history. At 1 a.m. Pacific on December 5, scientists fired the world’s most energetic lasers to recreate the process that gives stars like the Sun their sparkle — turning hydrogen into helium.

For the first time in history, this attempt to recreate nature produced surplus energy. After putting in two megajoules of energy, the reactor spit out a bit over 3 MJ, according to Tuesday's DOE press conference. This breakthrough is more than six decades in the making and brings us a step closer to an abundant new form of clean energy.

“We have taken the first tentative steps toward a clean energy source that could revolutionize the world,” said Jill Hruby, the Department of Energy’s under secretary for nuclear energy, during the press conference.

Colorado’s radical decriminalization efforts may herald a new era for psychedelics

Last month, voters in Colorado passed Proposition 122 — the broadest drug decriminalization measure ever approved in the United States.

The Natural Medicine Health Act defined certain psychoactive compounds derived from plants and fungi as “natural medicine.” Included are psychedelics dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ibogaine, mescaline (excluding peyote), psilocybin, and psilocin, the latter two of which are found in magic mushrooms.

Under this new definition, personal use, possession, growth, and transportation of these substances will be decriminalized for people at least 21 years of age and older.
