Apple is working on a search engine to rival Google Search. Google currently pays Apple around $15 billion per year to stay as the default search engine on Apple devices. An in-house alternative may help Apple increase its leverage during its periodic negotiations with Google. Apple's search technology is currently used to generate data for Apple apps that use natural language processing and to determine what news should show up in results and recommended Apple News articles.

Scientists pioneer ‘game-changing’ freezing technique that could save the Great Barrier Reef’s coral (2 minute read)

Scientists have managed to freeze coral larvae for the first time. The technique could be used to rewild the Great Barrier reef, which is under threat from coral bleaching and invasive species. It stores coral larvae at -196 degrees Celsius. The scientists are currently testing the technique with larger varieties of coral.
Laser Fusion Ignition: Putting Nuclear Fusion Breakthroughs Into Perspective (6 minute read)

The US National Ignition Facility's recent announcement that it had produced a net fusion energy gain of about 1.5 does not mean that we have entered the age of commercial nuclear fusion reactors. The technology is still likely decades away. However, the achievement is still noteworthy. Putting a price tag on fundamental research makes little sense as the results of the research will make life easier for everyone.
