Is Gronk going to reunite with Tom Brady?
From The Gist Team
Happy Christmas Eve Eve!
We hope youâre staying warm and cozy as this arctic blast hits North America. One thing that might help? Making some eggnog and enjoying the sweet sounds of A Philly Special Christmas album from the NFLâs Philadelphia Eagles, which is out today. Shame they couldnât get Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker to make a cameo.
- BTW, before we take a holiday vacation next week, look out for an extra special gift in your inbox on Christmas Day. *winks*

đ NFL Week 16: Itâs the most wonderful time of the year
The GIST: Hope you asked Santa for âmore footballâ this year because there are 11 (!!!) games tomorrow ahead of a Christmas Day triple-header and a Boxing Day grand finale. Fifteen football games across three days? Thatâs called yuletide joy. Now letâs check out the pre-holiday spectacular.
AFC playoff picture: The Buffalo Bills are standing atop the AFC with 11 wins and a guaranteed postseason spot. So whatâs on the line this weekend? The AFC East division title, which could be theirs with a win or tie against the Chicago Bears tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
- Crouching behind them in third is the Cincinnati Bengals, who can lock in a playoff berth of their own with a dub over the New England Patriots, also tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
- From there, things get complicated. Though the Baltimore Ravensâ playoff chances would greatly improve with a win over the Atlanta Falcons tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET, their fate is controlled by a few other games. Same goes for the LA Chargers against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET.
NFC playoff picture: Leading the NFC are the playoff-bound Eagles, who are still looking to lock up the NFC East. Doing so tomorrow at 4:25 p.m. ET against the Dallas Cowboys wonât be easy â Eagles quarterback (QB) and MVP candidate Jalen Hurts is, ahem, hurt with a shoulder injury keeping him on the sidelines.
- Meanwhile, a NY Giants win this weekend gets them this close to the playoffs, but first theyâll have to beat the Minnesota âcomebackâ (Vi)kings tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
Game of the weekend: Youâll have to wait until Christmas Day for our pick of the weekend: the Green Bay Packers vs. the Miami Dolphins, Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Itâs a tale as old as St. Nick himself: the Old Dog vs. the New Tricks. LFG.
đ College Football Playoff: Let the games begin
The GIST: Itâs the most wonderful time of the college football year, and this seasonâs semifinals are ones for the books. No. 1 Georgia is aiming to become the first-ever back-to-back champs, No. 3 TCU is the first not-Oklahoma Big 12 team to make the final four, and there could be a spicy rivalry title game between No. 2 Michigan and No. 4 Ohio State. Tasty.
- Before 2023 makes its grand tunnel entrance, the two New Yearâs Eve semifinals will determine who has a shot at a January 9th confetti shower.
Vrbo Fiesta Bowl: No. 2 Michigan Wolverines vs. No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs, 4 p.m. ET (ESPN): The dayâs most fascinating matchup features second-half standouts. Undefeated Michigan has made a season out of an impressive run game, clock control and wearing out their opponents early in order to overtake them after halftime.
- On the other hand, TCU and their Heisman finalist QB Max Duggan have been the comeback chaos-makers, clawing out five dubs after trailing by at least seven points.
- If this turns into an offensive fight, TCU could topple the Big Ten champs. But if Michiganâs defense and endurance show up, the Wolverines could be dining on frog legs with their New Yearâs champagne.
Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl: No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs vs. No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes, 8 p.m. ET (ESPN): In the second-ever battle between the defending champ Bulldogs and the just-squeaked-in Buckeyes, it seems clear whoâll end up as top âDawg. Undefeated Georgiaâs dominated all year, with a defense, led by lineman Jalen Carter, that gobsmacks opponents.
- Ohio State will need every advantage. Their offense was exceptional this season, but now theyâll be playing without stars RB TreVeyon Henderson and WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, due to injury and the NFL draft, respectively.
- The Buckeyesâ hopes rest squarely on the shoulders of Heisman finalist QB C.J. Stroud and top WR Marvin Harrison Jr. Both will need to be near-perfect, as will the Ohio State defense, to overtake the Goliath that is Georgia. Breath? Held.
đ Miracle in Minneapolis
The GIST: The Minnesota Vikingsâ Christmas miracle came early last Sunday, turning a 33â0 halftime deficit into a 39â36 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts, the biggest comeback (!!!) in NFL history.
- To put it another way, the Colts had a 99.9% chance of winning at halftime andâŠlost.
The other guys: The Vikes werenât the only miracle-workers last week, as the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals both erased 17-point deficits of their own to win their respective games against the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Absolute chaos.
The gut check: Sports teach us to never give up hope, even when the odds are stacked against us. And when you feel the tides starting to change, you can turn to FanDuel to live bet during games. Cash in on the leagueâs comeback kings.
Holiday watching, NCAA edition |
đŹ Allstate Sugar Bowl â No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. No. 11 Kansas State Wildcats â Saturday, Dec. 31st at 12 p.m. ET â ESPN
- With not one, but two phenomenal QBs in smarty-pants Adrian Martinez and canât-believe-heâs-a-backup Will Howard, Kansas State could show Bama head coach (HC) Nick Saban that actions speak louder than words.
đ Menâs basketball: No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2) vs. No. 15 Mississippi State Bulldogs (11-1) â Wednesday, Dec. 28th, at 9 p.m. ET â SEC Network
- This matchup is all about redemption. No. 1âteam conqueror Bama fell to No. 11 Gonzaga last weekend, while the Bulldogs suffered their first L of the season on Tuesday. Will MSU bounce back? Or will the Tide add another ranked foe to their victory list?
đ Womenâs basketball: No. 10 LSU Tigers (12-0) vs. No. 17 Arkansas Razorbacks (13-2) â Thursday, Dec. 29th, at 7 p.m. ET â ESPN2
- LSU may be undefeated this season and boast the dominant Angel Reese, but itâs difficult to truly assess the Tigers due to their abysmally soft schedule. Arkansas will be the first real chance for the Tigers to earn a ranked-opponent stripe.
