The best tech of 2022

Technology is reshaping the world faster and more frenetically than ever.

Our Swiss Army Knife smartphones got more polished. Handheld gaming, largely fueled by the Steam Deck, waltzed into the spotlight. And EVs — be they electric cars or personal mobility like e-bikes and e-scooters — are really starting to redefine the definition of transportation while changing lifestyles in both cities and suburbs.

Even amid significant supply chain issues holding up production, 2022 managed to see some notable tech product releases. Arc is the best web browser to come out in the last decade

Web browsers are more powerful than ever, but using them can be soul-sucking. The Browser Company wants to change that.

Together with co-founder Hursh Agrawal, Miller knows it's the challenge of a lifetime to not only build a modern web browser specifically made for how we connect on the internet in 2022, but also to convince people that there can be an alternative to Google Chrome, and it can be beautiful, and more fun, and more functional — more human.

At the end of every year, we take a minute to look back at the actors who managed to leave a lasting impression despite not having a starring role. In 2022, that included everyone from Tenoch Huerta’s snarling antagonist of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to the latest scream queen in Mike Flanagan’s horror empire.

Check out the full list, along with eight original and illuminating interviews, below.

Is Planet Nine out there? New telescope could finally settle the long-standing mystery

The camera resting in an impeccably clean, lint-free room at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, California, resembles an extremely oversized version of the SLR lenses for Nikon or Canon cameras. But it won’t snap family holiday cards or pet portraits.

This massive device has a five-and-a-half foot aperture and a length of nearly 10 feet. Called the LSST Camera, which stands for the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, it’s destined for the National Science Foundation’s Vera Rubin Observatory, which is now under construction atop Chile’s Cerro Pachón mountain.

By the end of 2024, the observatory is scheduled to kick off a 10-year project that aims to enhance our understanding of the universe.

9 species rediscovered in 2022

When no one spots a plant or animal for a long time, chances increase that its species has gone extinct. But sometimes, species lost to science unexpectedly reappear.
