9 simple business ideas you can start in 2023

Ready to kickstart 2023 by launching your dream business?

Finding the right idea can be challenging, though. 

To spark your creativity, I’ve put together a list of 9 simple business ideas. 

These ideas are low-cost and easy to get off the ground. Use these stories to get you motivated and learn all the strategies these founders used to start and grow their businesses:

👉 Offer handyman services ($21K/month)

Why: The number of people who don’t know how to fix a socket, repair a plumbing issue, or clean a chimney (see case study) is growing exponentially.

Biggest advantage: If you can do any of the above (or know someone who does), you possess a precious and in-demand skill.

Easiest way to get started: Target populations with a higher percentage of young people living independently. They’re the perfect target for this. If you’re good with it, post TikTok videos with simple how-to guides to grow your brand.

👉 Productivity planners ($12K/month)

Why: Time is limited, and people want to get as much as possible done. But they need help and guidance.

Biggest advantage: Take advantage of marketplaces to distribute. No need to invest in tech.

Easiest way to get started: Build the digital version first. Give it away for free or sell it very cheap. Gather feedback to make the physical (and more expensive) version.

👉 Junk removal ($18K/month) 

Why: The amount of junk generated will never stop growing. The niche is only going to grow. 

Biggest advantage: Anyone can do it. Are you good at marketing? Get customers and outsource the work to someone with a van.

Easiest way to get started: Leave flyers around the neighborhood. Advertise on Craiglist. Let your network know about it. Only rent a van (the cheapest possible) when you get a job.

👉 Party decoration service ($20K/month)

Why: Are we ever not going to have parties?

Biggest advantage: Do something unique like balloon decorations, crazy flower arrangements, or ice sculptures of celebrities to stand out.

Easiest way to get started: Go to party venues and ask them to recommend you to their customers (in exchange for a commission). 

👉 Connect supply and demand ($20K/month) 

Why: The business model works for every possible industry out there. There are tons of underserved niches that don’t have online marketplaces (see case study). 

Biggest advantage: Some industries haven’t moved to the online space yet. Those should be a priority.

Easiest way to get started: Fake the supply. Try to get sales and manually do all the processes to place the order. Make sure the supplier knows it’s you bringing in the sales. 

👉 Sell a subscription ($20K/month) 

Why: Sometimes, it’s a business model that simply makes the most sense. Build a client base, and make money on autopilot. 

Biggest advantage: Two words: Recurring revenue.

Easiest way to get started: Don’t buy stock upfront unless strictly necessary. Focus on getting customers. Even if you lower your profit margins, buy the product after the customer has paid you. 

👉 Build a plugin ($29K/month) 

Why: If you’re a developer, you have to try to build and sell something on your own. 

Biggest advantage: Leverage popular platforms like Shopify, or Chrome that rely on plugins and addons to boost their capabilities. 

Easiest way to get started: Leverage building in public to share your journey, gather feedback, and have people ready to use your product once it’s ready.

👉 Organize food tours ($30K/month) 

Why: Tourists want authentic experiences. They want to know how locals eat, have fun, etc. 

Biggest advantage: The tours model can be applied to many spaces: hiking, urban art, or famous film locations. 

Easiest way to get started: Test it with locals first. Sell it as a team-building activity to companies. Or as a birthday/anniversary celebration. Or simply something fun to do with your friends and family. 

👉 Launch a blog ($15K/month) 

Why: It’s extremely cheap to start. Pick any topic, any. There will be an audience for it. 

Biggest advantage: Combine different business models to build several income streams: ads, affiliates, sponsored content, sell digital products, paid community, etc.

Easiest way to get started: Use ChatGPT to get post ideas, outlines, and all sorts of content. So you don’t have to start from scratch if writing isn’t your strongest skill.
