Inverse - 🌎 Record-breaking heat

Jan. 19, 2023

Most of the world’s species inhabit a niche — like Goldilocks, not too hot or too cold. Much more variation and they can be put at risk, which makes catastrophic climate change all the scarier. A new study finds that under worst scenarios, like a 4.4 degree Celsius rise in temperature, several land animals could be in danger — more than half of amphibians and reptiles, but a not-insignificant number of birds and mammals too.

There’s hope, though. If we can keep warming more in line with the Paris Agreement, below 2 degrees Celsius, only six percent would be in danger. The more animals affected, the greater a chance of downstream effects too, including ecosystem collapse, so it’s important we do everything we can to prevent this kind of catastrophe.

Almost half of land animals will soon face extreme heat — here's why that's so scary

As we descend into the deep chill of winter, it’s easy to forget that 2022 was a year of record-breaking heat.

Across the globe from Portugal to India, extreme heat threatened millions and took thousands of lives. But while scientists have determined how much heat events will threaten humans in the future, less attention has been paid to how animals will fare under these temperature extremes.

Now, scientists are starting to sound the alarm bell — and their message is grim. Researchers found a massive percentage of land animals will face extreme heat if we don’t act to curb climate change. The findings were published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

'Avatar 3' might fix the sci-fi saga’s biggest problem

Now that Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed enough money to secure more sequels, writer and director James Cameron is tinkering with the script for Avatar 3 to change its main narrator from Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully to his son, Lo’ak (Britain Dalton).

Cameron credits audience feedback for the change, but regardless of the source, it’s a good decision. Jake Sully is a bland, boring character, which may contribute to the argument that Avatar never left any cultural footprint.

Chevy’s new E-Ray Corvette makes hybrid cars feel sexy

You almost have to feel bad for all the Corvette discussion groups out there.

For decades they were hotbeds of speculation about a mid-engined Corvette. Then, when Chevrolet finally silenced that discussion thread by releasing the C8, everyone started speculating about a hybrid Corvette. Today, it's time to shut down those rumor mills too.

The hybrid-powered 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray exists and, after a visit to GM's super-secure Milford Proving Grounds, we feel confident in saying it will not disappoint.

The U.S. Department of Defense has investigated more than 500 UFO cases

The tally of strange, often unexplained encounters under the name unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) has passed 500, according to a new report from the Pentagon published Thursday.

Upon Congress’ request, the U.S. Department of Defense assembled a task force called the AARO, or All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office, back in July 2022. Its goal is to determine what’s behind these UAP sightings.

With the January 2023 report, the public is invited to participate in what Pentagon officials have said they want to be a transparent process. And though the report offers some explanations, the cause of many of the cases remains a mystery.

SpaceX Starship launch could be on the horizon, Musk says

2023 could be the year that SpaceX finally sends its massive Starship vehicle on an orbital test flight.

Last week, SpaceX tweeted that teams are starting tests leading up to Starship’s first orbital flight. That includes a wet dress rehearsal and firing of the Super Heavy booster’s full suite of 33 engines.

The company also shared several new photos of Starship fully stacked on the launch pad, signaling that liftoff is on the horizon.
