Would Perfume Genius rather spend a day alone with Rory or Lorelai?

Welcome to the gawker newsletter

Good evening, Gawkerettes. Today we have an exclusive interview with musician and artist Perfume Genius, who has finally, thank god, watched Gilmore Girls. We forgive him for liking Dean, I guess. We also take a stroll down memory lane to a time when Rihanna said she could never support the NFL. If anyone has any information as to why she agreed to perform at this year’s Super Bowl, tips@gawker.com. We further take a stroll through Taylor Swift’s music-video history in celebration of the forthcoming premiere of “Lavender Haze” (the music video). As much as anyone loves her, you gotta admit: visuals are not her medium. And finally, we leave you with some advice. Not from us, but from David Foster, who has gained a lot of wisdom parenting his six kids. The most important thing is to find your groove.

TOWN TROUBADOUR
A Conversation With Perfume Genius About ‘Gilmore Girls’

By Kelly Conaboy

Set my Stars Hollow on fire immediately.

Mike Hadreas, the musician known as Perfume Genius, recently binge-watched the early-aughts teen drama Gilmore Girls for the first time. I know this from Twitter. As a Perfume Genius fan, and as someone who is required to watch Gilmore Girls every day for medical reasons that are actually none of your business, I was delighted to see two of my interests meeting, and to finally have an excuse to approach Hadreas under the guise of work. Thankfully, he accepted my request to discuss the series at length.

Rihanna Fumbles Principles for Halftime Show

By Tarpley Hitt

Does the former Super Bowl boycotter have a trick up her sleeve

The Super Bowl, America’s favorite non-religious holiday, is a little more than two weeks away. It’s still unclear which teams will square off at Arizona’s State Farm Stadium on Feb. 12, but we all know at least one person who will be playing: Robyn Rihanna Fenty, will be headlining the game’s halftime show.

Rihanna has been on NFL Head of Music Seth Dudowsky’s half-time show wish list “for years.” But she has already, very publicly turned down the offer to perform. In 2018, Us Weekly reported that Rihanna had rejected the NFL’s halftime invite in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, a year after he was forced into free agency for kneeling during the National Anthem. She doubled-down on her NFL boycott when Vogue asked if she’d turned down the show in a 2019 interview:

Absolutely. I couldn’t dare do that. For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler….

FILM SCHOOL (TAYLOR'S VERSION)
Taylor Swift's Music Videos: A Race to the Bottom

By Olivia Craighead

A visual medium is not her forte

Out of more than 50 music videos, Taylor Swift has only ever made two that are, in my estimation, exceptional. Were you to rank Swift’s videography, “Blank Space” would take the top spot, then “You Belong With Me,” and it wouldn’t really matter after that. Maybe “Love Story” would be third, I don’t know. I can’t rank a bunch of Taylor Swift content again, it almost killed me the last time. The point is that Swift has a horrible batting average when it comes to music videos, and it’s not likely to improve with tonight’s release of the long-anticipated video for “Lavender Haze,” which she has teased on social media:

FATHER TIME
David Foster’s Collected Wisdom on Being a Really Old Dad

By Allie Jones

The 73-year-old musician knows a thing or two about taking care of a baby

Almost two years ago, David Foster became a dad for the sixth time at the ripe old age of 71. His current wife, Katharine McPhee, gave birth to a son, Rennie, who is blessed to follow Foster’s five older children who range in age from 36 to 52. In the weeks leading up to Rennie’s second birthday, Foster has been thinking about his life as a really old dad, and regularly sharing those thoughts in different interviews with People, for some reason. You may find his wisdom useful, so we have collected it all in one place for your convenience.
