What to do in your first days as a product manager
Starting a new product management job can be exciting and intimidating at the same time. You’re excited because you get to work on a new product and solve fresh problems. You’re intimidated because everything is new, and you have a lot of learning to do. If your new company does not have a good onboarding approach, you may initially find yourself with little to do. To make sure that doesn’t happen, here are some suggested plans for your first quarter in a new PM role.

How to nail your first 90 days as a product manager. Whether you are an experienced product manager starting a new job or an entry-level product professional, your first 90 days are critical. Not only do they allow you to make a great first impression — and the first impression lasts — it’s also the time when the expectations of you are lowest. You’ll also have the most free time and capacity that you’ll ever have. Bart Krawczyk explains how to make the most out of your first days as a product manager in a new company.

Over the past decade, VC funded startups delivered conveniences like rapid delivery, used-car vending machines, personalized fashion and online fitness coaches. Then, more recently, pandemic lockdowns supercharged consumer spending on these products and services. But things are looking bleak for the “nice-to-have economy," according to the Wall Street Journal. The reason: consumers are paring back spending as the job market cools and inflation cuts into spending power, and investors are now also less willing to fund risky high-growth businesses. This means startups need to think about how they can generate revenue with things people actually need rather than trying to grow at all costs to deliver nice to haves.
If you ever wished you had one place where you could keep all the notes and highlights from things you read electronically you may be in luck. Readwise is a tool that syncs with your Kindle highlights and serves five highlights for you to review daily. You can also tag your highlights as you review so that you can easily find relevant passages later. The company also offers a second product, Reader (still in beta) designed to let you read anything on the web. That includes RSS feeds, Twitter lists, PDFs, articles in your browser, iOS or Android device. As you read, you can quickly highlight key passages that then get added to your database for your daily review.
Does the weekly “opportunity” to provide an internal update on your team’s progress fill you with fear and loathing? Fear no more. A new product called Broadcast allows you to draft internal updates with the help of AI and publish them to Slack or email. The tool saves you time compiling status reports by integrating directly with common tools in the product stack including Asana, GitHub, Gmail, Notion, and more.
Craft.io recently launched its Product Portfolio Management Solution. If you’re in an enterprise product organization, this tool helps you manage your product portfolios so you can make better, more informed decisions about your products and drive growth. Key features include a portfolio roadmap, the ability to track cross-product-line dependencies, and a uniform data model across all hierarchies of your product organization.

Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day was yesterday – and every year when it comes, I’m reminded of two things:
- It’s pretty wild that we trust a groundhog to predict the weather for the next 6 weeks.
- Bill Murray is one of the best comedic actors ever.
Of course, Bill Murray is the star of the movie, Groundhog Day, which is a timeless classic that reminds us that every day is a new opportunity to improve – as the character that Murray portrays has to re-live the same day over and over again until certain things are resolved.
Let’s be honest – sometimes, being a Product Manager can feel like we’re a part of that movie. It’s not that every day is exactly the same. But sometimes, we can get stuck in a rut where we’re going through the motions. It feels like our actions aren’t going to make a material difference. No matter what we do, we think the end result will be the same. If that’s the case with you…
THEN SNAP OUT OF IT!
The beauty of our role as Product Managers is that we really do have the ability to make a big impact. That impact isn’t just on our product, we actually have the ability to make a real difference in our customers’ lives.
It’s totally normal to sometimes feel like you’re going through the motions. But if you feel like you haven’t been making that difference you’ve been wanting to make lately, use today as an opportunity to think about how you can. Right this moment, pause and think to yourself, “What’s one thing I can do differently today in order to make a real impact?”
Yesterday may have been Groundhog Day, but let’s think of today as Opportunity Day.
What do you say?

Sometimes, the people who would benefit most from attending conferences may not be in the room — and we want to help change that for the upcoming European edition of INDUSTRY (Dublin, Ireland - March 20-22, 2023).
We are pleased to continue to work with Balsamiq for the fifth year to offer a scholarship program to help product management professionals who otherwise may not attend this conference due to financial constraints. This year, we’ll be awarding thirty (30) scholarships for General Admission passes to attend.

First 90 days in product management career. So, you just got your first product management job. Congratulations! Your first three months in a PM role are the most challenging and also the most educational as you’ll be learning about what works and what doesn’t by unlearning things, starting from scratch in a new product org and sometimes a new product market and a different set of users that you now have to develop empathy from scratch. Mahima Arora shares pointers on how to best set up for success during the first critical 90 days of you joining a company.

A Product Manager’s First 90 Days. About half of the Product Managers Anthony Murphy coaches seek support with either finding a new role or they have recently started a new role. So he shared how he approaches the first 90 days based on his experience through both starting new roles, onboarding Product Managers and the dozens of Product managers he’s coached through their first 90 days. Although primarily based on my experience in product roles, much of this is transferrable to starting any new role.

This week, Product Collective launched a new initiative to connect talented members of the community (you!) with tech-driven companies. It works this way - you apply and share your experience (for free!), then companies who have signed up for the service can find you. And don't worry, you can hide from certain companies. There's also a Job Board to check out.
Tech recruiters - over 150 talented candidates are already in the system with hiring companies like Playbook, Sydecar, FirstHand, and others already signed up and taking advantage of this opportunity.
We've already facilitated 29 intros over the past month! If you want to check the candidates out, simply reply and I'll tell you more (plus I'll share a generous launch discount to get you going!). Or you can simply go ahead and sign up directly here.
