7 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Stop Feeling Overwhelmed

As entrepreneurs, we're all too familiar with the feeling of being overwhelmed. Our to-do lists are never-ending, and there never seems to be enough time in the day.

Overwhelm can lead to anxiety, stress, and even impact our mental and physical health. Here are 7 strategies to help you regain control and thrive in the face of overwhelm.

1. Embrace Deep Breathing Techniques

The relaxation response, developed by Harvard Medical School physician Herbert Benson in the 1970s, is a state of deep rest that can counteract stress. Techniques like mindfulness, tai chi, yoga, and deep (diaphragmatic) breathing can help induce this response. It sounds too simple, but learning and practicing deep breathing can help you relax and think more clearly.

2. Write Down Your Thoughts

Clear your mind by writing down everything you need to do. This exercise can help reduce the feeling of overwhelm by unloading your mental RAM. If negative thoughts are causing you distress, write them down and then throw them away. This simple act can help clear your mind and move on with less 'mental baggage'.

3. Set Clear Goals and Prioritize

To avoid feeling overwhelmed by numerous tasks, set 3 to 5 important goals for the next 90 days. For each goal, identify the top 3 activities that will move you closer to achieving it. These are the tasks you should focus 80% of your time on. Use this is a compass to help you make the right decisions every step of the way.

4. Focus on Process, Not Outcome

While having a vision or goal is essential, focusing too much on the outcome while working can make tasks feel overwhelming. Instead, concentrate on the process of completing individual tasks. Embrace the joy in the process of achieving your goals. It's a bit of a cliche, but it really does pay off to enjoy the journey.

5. Develop a Single-Tasking Habit

Multitasking is less productive than single-tasking, as shown by a 2009 Stanford University study. Focusing on one task at a time will make you more productive and less stressed. Single-tasking is also more likely to get you into a flow state where you can do your best work.

6. Learn to Do Less

Accept that you won't get everything done and focus on doing a small number of things that truly matter. Reflect on your priorities and consider what you'd like to have accomplished five years from now. Focus on getting results that matter instead of trying to do more.

7. Begin with Micro-Actions

Starting with small, easily achievable goals can help build confidence and momentum. When feeling overwhelmed, set a micro-goal for yourself that is so simple you won't resist doing it. This approach can help you make progress on larger goals. As Tony Horton used to say in the P90X videos - "You can do anything for 30 seconds!".

Remember, there's no magic solution to overcoming overwhelm. However, these strategies can help you navigate the challenges and thrive as an entrepreneur. When you feel overwhelmed, pause, and use these techniques to clear your mind and refocus.
