The GIST - You’re so golden
From The Gist Team |
Talk about a manic Monday!
From the hard launch of a surprising new celebrity couple to on-court shockers, nothing is the same as it was after another March weekend full of Madness.

P.S. What better way to cope with the chaos than with a little retail therapy? Today’s the last day to enter for a chance to win a $2K shopping spree to any brand of your choice. Okay, enough

Quote of the Day |
I want to be a key player for Gotham FC while also having grace and compassion with myself as I acclimate back into the professional environment…I hope to inspire others to follow their dreams, no matter how far out of reach they may seem. |
|
— NWSL whistleblower Sinead Farrelly, who returned to the league with NJ/NY Gotham FC yesterday after a nearly eight-year absence from the NWSL — just one highlight of a record-setting opening weekend for the league. A true game changer. |

🎓🏀 And then there were four
The GIST: Four beyond-unlikely contenders — No. 4 UConn, No. 5 San Diego State, No. 5 Miami and No. 9 Florida Atlantic — are headed to next weekend’s men’s Final Four. Houston, we have a problem championship field.
Elite Eight recap: The weekend’s lone snoozer belonged to the UConn Huskies, who rocked No. 3 Gonzaga’s season to sleep with an 82–54 blowout on Saturday, booking a ticket to their sixth Final Four in the process. Fun fact: The Huskies have beaten every tourney opponent this year by at least 15 points. Hey Google, what’s the definition of domination?
- Elsewhere on Saturday, the Florida Atlantic Owls trashed brackets by becoming the first of three 2023 Final Four first-timers after clawing out a dynamic 79–76 win over No. 3 Kansas State.
- The thriller of the weekend went to the San Diego State Aztecs, who brought all the excitement and a March Madness brother rivalry rematch to yesterday’s last-second 57–56 win (that seemed to last light-years) over No. 6 Creighton.
- And finally, the Miami Hurricanes ended No. 2 Texas’ natty hopes with a stunning 88–81 upset win over the highest-seed left on the Elite Eight court. Next weekend’s forecast? A storm’s a brewin’.
What’s next: Speaking of, it’ll sadly be a long five days without men’s hoops — the Final Four tips off from NRG Stadium on Saturday. We’ll have a full preview in your inbox Saturday morning, of course, but until then, women’s hoops have the floor…
🎓🏀 Still dancin’
The GIST: The No. 3 seed LSU Tigers and No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes are yee-hawing all the way to Friday’s women’s Final Four in Dallas, where for the first time in a long time, there won’t be a UConn gals’ squad on the court. Tune in tonight to see who will join the Tigers and Hawkeyes. Giddy up!
Yesterday’s matchups: Unlike their head coach Kim Mulkey’s head-scratching style choices, LSU made a statement with their 54–42 win over the No. 9 Miami Hurricanes. While the ’Canes rumbled in the first half, the Tigers, led by star Angel Reese’s SEC-record 32nd double-double, outran them to the victory. Category one…and done.
- The Hawkeyes also impressed with their 97–83 victory over No. 5 Louisville, courtesy of Caitlin Clark’s big hands and her 40-point triple-double, the first in NCAA tourney history. Step aside Kent — there’s a new Clark in town, and she doesn’t need a cape.
Tonight’s contests: The two remaining Final Four spots are up for grabs tonight, and it’s a double “Big Ten vs. No. 1 seed” showdown. First up, the No. 3 Maryland Terrapins will try to slow the undefeated No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks at 7 p.m. ET. It’s a tall task for the Terps, who already fell hard to South Carolina in November.
- Then the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes will take on the No. 1 Virginia Tech Hokies at 9 p.m. ET. While the Bucks were fierce in their Saturday win over No. 2 UConn, it’ll take a full team effort to turn the 30-4 Hokies around tonight.
🧰 Let’s get down to business
The GIST: There’s nothing worse than beginning a new week feeling unprepared. Luckily, Vagisil’s coming through with a checklist of items to gather before diving head-first into your day:
- A tall glass of water
- Your caffeinated emotional support beverage of choice
- Hand lotion and lip balm to combat this dry AF air
- A cute planner turned to a fresh page
- A scented candle for the ambience
Another tool to help you seize the day? Vagisil’s personal care products. They’re created by female scientists and have 50 years of efficacy backing them up. Mondays and itchy vulvas don’t stand a chance.
Quick Hits |
🏒 PHF
For the first time in franchise history, the Toronto Six are Isobel Cup champions after topping the Minnesota Whitecaps 4–3 in overtime (OT) in last night’s one-game championship showdown. The highlight? Forward Tereza Vanišová’s clutch OT game-winner.
🎾 Tennis
With ranked fan favorites No. 6 Coco Gauff and No. 19 Madison Keys ousted in this weekend’s Round of 32 singles draw, No. 3 Jessica Pegula is the last American woman standing at the Miami Open. She’ll face Poland’s No. 20 Magda Linette today at 1:20 p.m. ET.
- As for the men, there’s a trio of seeded red, white and blue competitors still in contention. No. 9 Taylor Fritz and No. 16 Tommy Paul are through to the Round of 16, and No. 12 Frances Tiafoe will join them if he beats Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego today at 7 p.m. ET.
⚽ USMNT
The fellas kicked off the second-ever CONCACAF Nations League tournament (which brings together the best national squads of North America) with a mic drop 7–1 win over Grenada on Friday, highlighted by a brace apiece for forward Ricardo Pepi and midfielder Weston McKennie.
- Just a draw against El Salvador tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET sends the defending champs to the knockout round, which resumes in June. Let’s run it back.
⛸️ Figure skating
After 12 years as partners, ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates won their first world title this weekend, becoming just the second U.S. pair and the oldest duo to ever win the event. So golden.
Nike knows that the potential for women in hoops is limitless, so they’re putting WNBA superstars Diamond DeShields and DiDi Richards and future W rookie Haley Jones on their roster.
- Together, they launched the Sisterhood collection, which honors the history and future of the women’s game. Representation has never been cooler.
The GIST's Picks |
March into the week with these fab reccos.
💻 What to watch
Would I Lie to You. We just can’t get enough of the hilarious panel show, which is free to watch on YouTube.
⛔ What to mind
The gap (in funding for women’s sports). Aflac is helping to close gaps on and off the court by committing real resources to address equity issues in women’s college basketball. Now that’s confetti-worthy.*
