Are you bouncing between efficiency and exhaustion?

If you had to pick a word to describe 2023 — what would it be?
Mine would be whiplash.
We're bouncing between bank bailouts, rampant inflation and corporate “rightsizing” - and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.
(After all, the Fed is still raising rates.)

- Improve organizational efficiency
- Cancel lower priority projects
- "Garbage collect" unnecessary processes
Efficiency is a recipe for burnout
I take umbrage to the term efficiency.
Sure, it’s a fix. But it’s merely a band-aid.
After all, you’re asking people to get more done in the same amount of time.
(Or said differently, to squeeze water out of a stone.)
And this "brute-force approach" to productivity is a recipe for burnout.
But efficiency is not the same thing as effectiveness.
Effectiveness is working on the right things.
It’s being strategic.
It’s learning how to evaluate opportunity costs.
As Steven Covey says:
To use our own framework, efficiency is $100 work — when you’re applying leverage to the wrong thing.
Why the brute-force approach won’t work
Working more is not the answer.
I get that it feels like a healthy coping strategy in the face of uncertainty.
But by now we know, hustling harder is not sustainable.
(Trust me — and my high blood pressure — we both had to learn this lesson the hard way.)

- Ruthless prioritization and triage
- Clearly setting boundaries (because someone is going to trample upon them)
- Diagnosing challenges and opportunities with creativity
