Transitions are always hard as they require that we leave what was once familiar. People leave their countries all the time, whether that's as refugees, seeking new opportunities, or for personal reasons. We live in a more globalized world than ever before, and it is natural to struggle to communicate in a new country.
​
The good news is that research shows that only 7% of communication is with words. Meanwhile, 55% of it is nonverbal and 38% of it is vocal. While there is some debate over these percentages, there is consensus that nonverbal communication matters a lot.
​
When you have the thought "I can't communicate clearly nowadays" how does that make you feel? Take a second to notice the sensation in your body. Perhaps it's insecure or confused or something else. Whatever that feeling is, I am guessing it is hard to communicate from the place.
​
If the result you'd like instead is to communicate clearly during job interviews, you will need to speak without doubting yourself and to tap into feelings of confidence. What is the thought you can tell yourself to feel confident? Perhaps something along the lines of "it's always hard in the beginning" or "I can communicate effectively even if I don't have the right words." You will need to find the thought that resonates most with you.
​
In addition to choosing more empowering thoughts, next time you're in a job interview and struggling to communicate, take a few moments to ground yourself in your body with a breathing exercise. When we are grounded, we are calmer. And when we are calmer, we communicate better.
