Vox Sentences - Fwd: Our world, explained

Below is an email I just sent to Vox’s staff, to mark our ninth anniversary. 

It also announces Vox’s new tagline — the one phrase that best represents who we are, and what we strive for every day. Our whole staff voted on the winner. 

Vox’s mission is to help everyone understand our weird, wonderful, complicated world, so that we can all help shape it. Keeping our work free is a key part of that mission.

I hope this month, our anniversary month, you’ll support that with your first gift to Vox.

When Vox launched nine years ago this month, it was animated by a simple observation: The media did a good job of reporting the news and commenting on it, but there was a disconnect between that work and the audience truly understanding why something happened. Vox started as — and remains — an organization dedicated to addressing that gap, which not only persists but has gotten worse. 

We are proud to have popularized explanatory journalism in many forms, across many mediums. But what keeps Vox a cut above is that we are the only outlet anywhere built for this. Providing context to what's happening is not an add-on to the mission — it is the mission. And we achieve that goal by producing journalism that is rigorous yet approachable, smart yet accessible, analytical yet empathetic. If we stay true to that north star and to those qualities, we will continue to succeed.

We do the reading, the listening, the research, and the reporting, all with the aim of helping the audience understand the world and come to their own conclusions. It’s our goal to approach each story with rigor and humanity. Ultimately, we hope this knowledge sparks conversation about how to shape a world that works.

On that note, I want to let you know that we’ve picked a tagline: Our world, explained. 

We picked this tagline because it’s a timeless expression of who Vox is, nine years in. We explain the news, but we also explain ideas and systems that are important or relevant but lurk just beneath the surface. 

We’re so glad you’re here and part of what makes Vox so special and indispensable.
