Someone shut injuries off before the next game, please. |

— Sportswriter Keith Smith, speaking for all of us after NBA stars Giannis Antetokounmpo (pronounced YAH-niss ah-det-oh-KOON-boh) of the Milwaukee Bucks, Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies, and the Miami Heat’s Tyler Herro suffered injuries in yesterday’s Game 1s. Go away, injury bug. |
The Latest |
🏒 About damn time
The GIST: Turn up Harry Styles because Team USA is finally golden once again after defeating their archrival Team Canada 6–3 in last night’s Women’s World championship final. Balance is restored.
How it happened: It was a back-and-forth nail-biter from start to finish. While the Canadians started out strong, holding the lead after the first two periods, the Americans continued to put pucks on net, never falling behind by more than one goal.
- Then, tied 3–3 with five minutes remaining in the third period, captain Hilary Knight capitalized on sweet five-on-three and subsequent five-on-four power play opportunities to net the game-winning hat trick (and her 101st career Worlds point), before a last-minute empty-netter sealed the deal for the Americans.
Zooming out: Ending their three-year drought feels pretty darn good, and it’s even more promising that they did it with an up-and-coming roster. While vets like Knight impressed as per usual, the young guns, including Caroline Harvey, dazzled on the big stage.
- Just when we thought it couldn’t get better than this, the future is looking bright for women’s hockey in general, too. The PWHPA is reportedly set to launch an official league later this year *knocks on wood*, and the PHF continues to grow.
👟 Running up that hill
The GIST: Ten years after tragedy struck at the 2013 Boston Marathon, 30,000 participants will take on the world’s oldest annual marathon as they begin their 26.2-mile journeys this morning. Wicked strong, indeed.
The details: Boston, one of six World Marathon Majors, is considered by many to be the world’s most prestigious marathon, largely due to how difficult it is to qualify. The majority of participants have to meet a (very fast) qualifying time, meaning even amateur runners are among the speediest.
- As for the course, racers will cross through eight Massachusetts cities and towns, taking on surprisingly punishing downhills for much of the first half before heading for infamous Heartbreak Hill and then the finish line in downtown Boston.
Runners to watch: “The fastest and most decorated Boston Marathon…in race history,” features an incredibly deep women’s field, with Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso, fresh off the third-fastest marathon finish in history last December, expected to lead the pack.
- And for the men, all eyes will be on the heavy favorite, world record holder and two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge, as the Kenyan makes his Boston debut in search of his 13th career World Marathon Major career victory. On your mark, get set…
🎓🤸 That’s a wrap from the mat
The GIST: The women’s and men’s college gymnastics seasons are officially in the books, with trophies hoisted by the sports’ dynasties: the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooner gals and the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal fellas. But before you start counting down the (353) days until 2024’s regionals, let’s flip through how this year’s championships unfolded.
The women: With their sixth title in nine years, you didn’t need a crystal ball to see Oklahoma’s back-to-back ’ship coming. Freshman Faith Torrez and sophomore Danae Fletcher reminded us it’s not called gymnicestics, clinching the victory with their floor routines.
- Another highlight? No. 2 Florida’s Trinity Thomas finishing her college career by leading the Gators to second place with a flawless vault that tied the NCAA record for career perfect 10s with 28. Who’s cutting onions?
The men: The Cardinal led the entire meet, vaulting their way to a fourth straight national championship. And freshman Asher Hong and sophomore Taylor Burkhardt flew the highest, finishing first and second in the vault, respectively. Truly soaring.
