Tim Ferriss - 5-Bullet Friday — April 14, 2023

Hi All!
Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward this along to friends.
Video I’m enjoying
Remember Shakti: Bell’Alla prt 2. I have a keen interest in hand percussion, and this video is one hell of a showcase. As one professional drummer friend put it, “They’re both heavy, heavy cats. Total masters. I’ve watched that clip dozens of times. No joke.” Zakir Hussain’s facial expressions when shredding are priceless. If you’d like a cool overview of the tabla, plus another amazing solo, check this out.
Documentary I’m revisiting
Bird by Bird with Annie. I’ve loved Anne Lamott (@ANNELAMOTT) and her work for more than a decade, and ever since I had her on the podcast, I’ve gone even deeper into the Annieverse. This documentary had just the right blend of humor, humanity, and insight to help me with some difficult emotions this week. Description: “Perhaps best known for her widely celebrated book on writing, Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott is one of the rare artists who can teach us not only how to write, but how to live. From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Freida Lee Mock (Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision), Bird by Bird with Annie offers an intimate portrait of the writer and her craft, interweaving the story of Lamott’s life—in itself a deeply moving tale of addiction and redemption, grief and joy, intellect and faith—with a year’s worth of interviews, public lectures, and readings and footage of the writer at work, focusing particularly on Lamott’s candid, humorous, and disarmingly straightforward advice on the struggles and joys of writing. In the end, the author’s genuine reassurance and guidance concerning the actual process of writing—which has little resemblance to its glorified image—becomes a stirring call to action that celebrates the potential of each individual, the silencing of our inner critics, and the courage to create something honest, meaningful, and real. Poignant and inspirational, Bird by Bird with Annie takes us deep into Anne Lamott’s intoxicatingly brave world, one in which writing is a means of finding out who we are, how we live, and why we’re here.” You can find the trailer here.
Essay I’m reading
“The age of average” by Alex Murrell (@alexjmurrell). Lest you throw up your hands too early, here is a key line near the end: “But it’s not all bad news. I believe that the age of average is the age of opportunity.” Thanks to Matt T. for sending this to me.
What I’m listening to
“La Descarriá” (YouTube, Apple Music, Spotify) by Corina Lawrence, feat. Miss Bolivia (Uji Remix)
Quote I’m pondering
“Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it.”
— Søren Kierkegaard

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my advice on how to build a luxury brand, my video on learning hand percussion, my conversation with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stewart Copeland, and my interview with Anne Lamott on taming your inner critic, perfectionism, prayer, and more.
And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.
Have a wonderful weekend, all.
Much love to you and yours,
Tim
P.S. Deal of the Week — LMNT’s delicious electrolyte drink mix!
You’ve heard me talk about LMNT for years. I usually use 1–2 packs per day for additional electrolytes. These days, as I’m logging more outdoor hours and weather is getting warmer, LMNT has been critical. I add electrolytes for many reasons: because I over-hydrate compulsively while stuck at a laptop (which dilutes electrolytes and leads me to feel tired), because I’m often on a low-carb diet, and because I sweat a LOT. LMNT is convenient hydration insurance that tastes great.
Each serving of LMNT delivers a meaningful dose of electrolytes without the garbage—no sugar, no artificial ingredients, no coloring, no junk. LMNT is used by dozens of professional teams in the NFL, NBA, and NHL; Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr (6x CrossFit Games winner); and thousands of others, like me, who are looking for a physical and mental edge. My favorite flavor is Citrus Salt, which, as a side note, you can use to make a kick-ass no-sugar margarita.
Find your favorite flavor with a free LMNT Sample Pack, included with any purchase for a limited time. And if you don’t love your purchase for any reason, my friends at LMNT offer a no-questions-asked refund policy. This special offer is available here >>> DrinkLMNT.com/Tim.
