Product Collective - 📈 Product led growth in action

Product-Led Growth Case Studies

Product-led growth has been around long enough that it’s easy to find perspectives on how it works in theory. As we all know, theory and practice are only the same in theory. When it comes time to actually implement product-led growth, it’s helpful to see how people have actually done it. Here are five case studies of how organizations implement product-led growth that you can pull lessons from.

Product-led growth case study for aspiring product managers. The folks at Emeritus share the story of Bolt, a checkout operating system for merchants selling online and its attempt to enter the small and medium business (SMB) market. The team at Bolt used product-led growth to gain thousands of SMB merchants, reducing the time to onboard merchants and convert a significant percentage of paid users.

Many companies are building a product-led business, and have many questions about their first steps and key challenges. Josias Oliveira discusses the hard decisions, behavioral changes, and first results Octadesk faced when shifting from a sales-led to a product-led business.

Do you struggle to figure out what your users think about your product when wading through reviews and ratings? Essence is a new product that could help your product team collate and aggregate feedback from multiple sources such as Google, Trustpilot, and the App Store. That way, you can get a full picture of what customers are saying about your product before you decide what to do about that feedback.

It's possible to hate meetings and still be an effective product manager. The secret is to find ways to communicate aligned with the purpose for the interaction. A new tool - Bubbles - helps you communicate in the right way by shifting team communication to an async-first model. This could be especially helpful if you work on a team separated by both time and space.

Some CEOs, like the ones at Starbucks and Uber, are joining their workers for shifts to find out for themselves what the people who directly provide their service experience on a day-to-day basis. It’s tempting to wonder why it took the CEO to get out of the building for these organizations to do some meaningful product discovery and act on it. Were the CEOs blocking suggested changes, or were their product teams not doing discovery in the first place?

Don't tell all of your secrets

As AI chatbots become more common in our lives, it's important to think twice before sharing your deepest secrets with them. Sure, they may seem like great listeners, but they're actually programmed to collect data about us, which could put our privacy at risk.

Mark McCreary, the co-chair of the privacy and data security practice at law firm Fox Rothschild LLP, told CNN. “It’s like a black box” when it comes to data privacy concerns.

Think about it: do you really want a machine to know your darkest secrets or sensitive information? Not only can this be used for targeted advertising, but it could also lead to identity theft or even the inadvertent disclosure of company secrets (which you may or may not be violating nondisclosures you’ve signed when you use AI technologies and share such information.)

So, before you spill all your tea to a chatbot, consider sticking to the basics and only use AI technologies for certain tasks where this isn’t an issue. Remember, as handy as chatbots can be, they're not your BFF. So, keep your private stuff private, and if you're ever in doubt, just ask yourself, "Would I share this with a stranger?" If the answer is no, then maybe hold off sharing it with your virtual assistant too.

The bottom line, be cautious, do your research, and use common sense. By doing so, you can ensure that your secrets… stay secret.

Loom’s product-led GTM playbook: How it became worth $1 billion. In the work world where notifications and meetings can be overwhelming, Loom brings speed and clarity to every interaction. Loom didn’t smell like a billion dollars in the beginning. Its founders had maxed-out credit cards and limited time to turn things around. Jessica Tee Orika with Foundation Marketing explains how Loom leveraged a product-led go-to-market strategy to become a unicorn and a verb in less than ten years.

But Cobalt didn’t have a defined path to success when it decided to transition from sales-led to product-led. Esben Friis-Jensen dives into the hurdles Cobalt overcame during the transition from sales-led to become a product-led organization. Read on to learn what PLG pitfalls to avoid and speed up your own company’s growth.

Jaryd wanted to get a solid understanding of what made them such a startup success story and identify lessons you can learn about product-led and community-led growth strategies. It turns out there were a lot of them.
