The GIST - So many sports, so little time
From The Gist Team |
Hump day!
This week is already flying by, but not as fast as Kenyan runners Evans Chebet and Hellen Obri, who swept the Boston Marathon, winning the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, on Monday.
- And the fast-paced action doesn’t stop there: the NWSL Challenge Cup kicks off tonight, but not before our special edition preview hits your inbox later today. So many sports, so little time — let’s get right to all of the other happenings.

Quote of the Day |
I've been beating statistics my whole life, so I like my chances here. |
|
— Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who was cleared to resume football activities yesterday and plans to return to the NFL after suffering a mid-game cardiac arrest in January. Absolutely incredible. |
The Latest |
🏀 Even the best fall down sometimes
The GIST: It’s way too early to predict where any series is heading in the always dramatic NBA Playoffs. Superstar injuries are threatening two powerhouses’ chances, while an on-court tussle left two ballers seeking medical attention. Can everyone calm down, please?
Giannis Antetokounmpo: Say it ain’t Antetokounmp-so. The Eastern Conference No. 1 Milwaukee Bucks held their breath after their All-Star took a hard fall in Game 1, exiting early during their loss to the No. 8 Miami Heat. Tests on his back came back clean, but Antetokounmpo is doubtful for tonight’s 9 p.m. ET Game 2.
Ja Morant: The Western Conference (WC) No. 2 Memphis Grizzlies star landed awkwardly on his right hand during their Game 1 loss to the No. 7 LA Lakers, aggravating an injury he suffered in the final week of the regular season.
- Morant is reportedly a game-time decision for Game 2, tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET, and the Grizz will certainly need him against a resurgent LeBron James and Co.
Hollywood-level drama in Cali: The battle between the WC No. 3 Sacramento Kings and No. 6 Golden State Warriors has been the first-round series to watch. The Kings have the defending champs’ Big Three down 2-0 for the first time, but that’s not the main storyline in this one.
- The Warriors Draymond Green was ejected from Game 2 after a scuffle with the Kings’ Domantas Sabonis, in which both feisty players got way too physical. Luckily there’s some time for tempers to cool before Game 3 on the Warriors’ home court tomorrow at 10 p.m. ET — the actual basketball has been spicy enough.
Odds & Ends |
🏈 Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts signed a historic five-year $255M contract extension yesterday — a deal notably made by his all-women agency team. We have no choice but to stan.
🎓🏀 Former Louisville guard Hailey Van Lith had an official visit with LSU yesterday and, as one of the biggest names in the transfer portal, would be a huge get for the defending champs. Can’t wait to see where she decides to geaux.
🎓🏀 Purdue center and AP men’s player of the year Zach Edey announced yesterday that he will enter the 2023 NBA Draft and maintain his college eligibility, securing the best of both worlds.
🏅 The International Olympic Committee deemed Russian teams ineligible to compete at the Paris 2024 Games, but will allow individual Russian athletes to take part under a neutral flag.
💗 Seattle women’s sports bar Rough & Tumble Pub will join several NWSL players in donating 1% of their revenue toward gender equity initiatives in youth soccer. Cheers to that.
Mid-week Watching |
🏒 NHL Playoffs: Florida Panthers vs. Boston Bruins — Tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET — ESPN
- The quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup is underway, and this first-round matchup between the record-setting Bruins (up 1-0 in the series) and the scrappy Panthers is just one of four exciting Game 2s on tap tonight. Nothing like playoff hockey.
⛳ LPGA: Chevron Championship — Tomorrow through Sunday — Golf Channel and Peacock
- The first major of the year makes its debut in The Woodlands, Texas, with a $5.1M purse on the line. And while the famed Poppie’s Pond plunge may be a thing of the past, the winner will still have the option to make a victorious leap this year. How refreshing.
⚾ MLB: San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks — Tomorrow at 9:40 p.m. ET — MLB Extra Innings
- After serving an 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, Padres superstar Fernando Tatís Jr. will make his return to the majors, and if his tune-up games are any indication, he’s more than ready to face the inevitable boos coming his way.
The WNBA season tips off one month from today (!!!), which means the return of the W’s impeccable pre-game drip. Want to be on NY Liberty star DiDi Richards' level? Check out Nike’s Sisterhood collection, a capsule dedicated to the history and future of the women’s game. No crumbs will be left.
