COMMUNITY: QUESTION
Am I being selfish?
I believe that my motivation for making an impact on the world is a way to not feel guilty about my privileged position in this world. The other reason is that I feel it will be a much more meaningful pursuit for me than just doing work for money. The third reason is that I want to see myself as someone who does good and when people ask me what I do for work, feel good about sharing my contribution. Am I being selfish?
COACH: ANSWER
Yes, these are all selfish reasons to go into the social impact space. But that is nothing to be ashamed of. We are all motivated by something. If these motivations feel selfish to you, what do you think you should be motivated by? Motivation is both intrinsic and extrinsic and it seems that your scale is tilted towards intrinsic motivators. Here are some additional questions to reflect on to better understand your intrinsic motivators to pursue a career in social impact: Are you motivated by the challenge? Do you enjoy contributing and feeling competent at what you do? Are you curious about what it will take to solve this problem? Does it give you some feelings of control to solve a social challenge? Do you enjoy taking your skills to the field and making a real impact? Meanwhile, other people choose to pursue a career that is motivated by money (an extrinsic motivator), and then make an impact in the world by contributing large donations. How do you feel towards these people? If you carry any judgement towards them, then I'd encourage you to explore that further. Because that is where the danger is. It is dangerous to feel like you are making a sacrifice by pursuing this work. As argued in the classic debate between Joey and Phoebe, there is no selfless good deed. The fact is, we all get to make a choice about our careers. Pursuing a career in social impact is your choice. And it should be a selfish choice, because otherwise you'll burnout quickly.
