10 THINGS ON WALL STREET

Welcome back! Dan DeFrancesco in NYC.

I NEED YOUR HELP! Send me questions for a mailbag edition of the newsletter coming on Friday. Submit any questions you have via this Google Doc. (It's anonymous.) No personal finance questions, please.

Today, we've got stories on who could take over for Morgan Stanley's James Gorman, fashion tips for working on Wall Street, and how to get a beach house on a budget.

But first, we've got some people worth keeping an eye on.

Four equity researchers in front of a green background

1. Rising stars of equity research.

When it comes to equity research, these analysts are a "strong buy."

(I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself.)

For a third consecutive year, Insider reporters canvassed their sources to identify the rising stars of equity research. This year's list includes 17 sell-side analysts who are 35 and under. The group hails from big and small shops and covers a variety of sectors.

You can check out the 2021 list here and the 2022 list here.

Much like determining our list of the top investment bankers in 2022, picking equity analysts this year was an interesting exercise. It's one thing when the market is booming. But when stocks are down, research becomes that more critical.

2. Succession plans at Morgan Stanley. James Gorman, the bank's CEO, plans to step down from his role within the next 12 months. (Hmmm, I wonder who could have predicted that.) Here's a look at the two very different execs vying for his job. And for more on Gorman's legacy, click here.

3. Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking. Save yourself the embarrassment and read our guide to how to dress for success on Wall Street. Check out the tips from a Goldman exec-turned-stylist.

4. PE <3 advertising companies. Private-equity firms were a part of more than half the acquisitions in advertising and marketing in 2022. These are the 14 firms that remain most active in the space.

5. Big banks are pitching products that mirror quant trades with great success. The process, known as quantitative investment strategies, amounts to swaps or structured notes that mirror the trading done by quantitative funds, Bloomberg reports. More here.

6. ESG pays, but not in the way you might be thinking. Finance employees with "ESG" or "sustainability" in their titles typically make 20% more than their peers, according to a Reuters report.

7. Microsoft's VC arm is having a tough go of it. A switch in strategy at M12 that led to changes in its compensation structure has caused an exodus of talent. More on what insiders are saying about the upheaval.

8. When expiration dates are just a suggestion. This TikToker details how he eats out-of-date food, including milk 41 days past its use-by date, without getting sick. It's all part of an effort to reduce food waste. More on why the answer to, "Is this still good?" is typically, "Yes."

9. The case against brainstorm meetings. Free up your calendar and ditch the brainstorm meeting, according to this CEO. Here's why the switch actually helped with idea generation.

10. Beachfront bargains. Looking for a beach house that doesn't break the bank? We've got you covered. These are 10 of the cheapest places to nab a beach house in the US.
