There’s a stunning scene in Jeen-Yuhs where Kanye and his mother, Donda, are sitting in her kitchen in Chicago, awing over the sudden rise of the young artist’s career.

After talking him up for a good while, Donda gently shares a piece of wisdom with her son, “I was thinking about something I was gonna say to you, Kanye, that I thought was important.”

Sensing his mother’s seriousness, Kanye stops smiling, tries on a poker face and listens intently to what she has to say.

“You got a lot of confidence that come off a little arrogant even though you’re humble and everything. But, it be important to remember that the giant looks in the mirror and sees nothing.”

Donda goes on to explain that while he can’t be a star and not act like one, he can burn bright while maintaining his humility.

In her own words, Donda says, “[You] can stand on the ground and you can be in the air at the same time…”

While it goes without saying that Donda’s wisdom fell on deaf ears that evening in Chicago so many years ago, her words are as pertinent today as they were back then.

In a society that rewards arrogance, those blessed with talent must continuously war with the temptation to gloat rather than inspire.

But, it’s worth remembering…
