Today we’re listening to Jackie Davis, an American jazz organist from Jacksonville, Florida. Born in 1920 to a musical family, Davis taught himself to play on his grandmother’s piano and was in a band by age 8.¹ He gravitated toward the organ, specifically the Hammond, an electric organ that came out in 1935.² Davis proved himself on the piano before bringing the organ sound to jazz, releasing several solo records on Capitol and Warner Brothers. We’re playing two of those today: Easy Does It from 1963 (including the unmissable tracks “Sleepy Time Gal” and “Midnight Sun”) as well as Most Happy Hammond from 1958.
