No More Surprises

The Story

Live Nation and SeatGeek are trashing “junk fees” (sort of).

Ticket, err, take it away.

Yesterday, the two companies pledged to stop adding “junk fees” for tickets at the time of checkout — a jump scare many know all too well. Ticket sellers often tag on service fees, increasing the sticker price by an average of 27%. Buyers knew it was trouble when they walked into the high prices and outages for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which put a spotlight on the industry's ticketing issues. Now, following pressure from the Biden admin, Ticketmaster’s parent company and SeatGeek are vowing to be more transparent.

Does that mean cheaper tickets?

Not necessarily. Instead, the two ticket sellers will list the full price of tickets up front for buyers. The White House said that beginning in September, Live Nation will include “junk fees” in the total listed price for all of its 200 venues. President Biden is calling the changes “a win for consumers.” One Democratic senator said that while the move is a step in the right direction, it doesn't go far enough to help.

The Biden admin has been trying to do away with extra fees across several industries — including the airline and hotel sectors. Now, the admin has convinced major ticket companies to be more transparent, but many worry the change will do little to improve affordability or accessibility.

And Also...This

What's issued a ruling…

The Supreme Court. Yesterday, it upheld the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) — a federal law that helps keep Native American adoptees with their tribes. In a 7-2 vote, the court sided with the tribes who maintained the ICWA helps preserve their cultures and traditions. The challengers in the case argued in part that the federal law was overstepping the state's control on issues of foster care and adoption. However, in the majority opinion, Justice Amy Coney Barrett said that Congress stood within its right to make “well-established and broad” laws about Native Americans. The court did not decide on whether the ICWA was racially discriminatory — another argument in the case — which could open up the possibility of someone challenging the law again.

Who people are talking about…

Conor McGregor. Yesterday, reports said that a woman accused the UFC star of sexually assaulting her during an NBA finals game in Miami last week. The woman said McGregor attacked her inside a men’s bathroom, where he “aggressively kissed her” and tried to force other sexual acts. She also alleged that McGregor’s security helped him by forcing her into the bathroom. McGregor denied the allegations. Miami police said it's investigating a report, but didn't give further details.

Whose case has updates...

Jack Teixeira's. Yesterday, a grand jury indicted the 21-year-old Massachusetts Air National guardsman on federal felony charges. In April, authorities arrested Teixeira for allegedly leaking classified intelligence documents about Russia’s war on Ukraine and other national security info on Discord. Now, he's facing six counts of retaining and transmitting classified national defense info. Teixeira faces up to 10 years in prison for each charge and a $250,000 fine, if convicted.

What has the health world concerned...

Depression. Yesterday, a new CDC report found that approximately one in five US adults have been diagnosed with depression. In 2020, 24% of US women were diagnosed with the disorder compared to 13% of men. Numbers also varied by state. West Virginia had the highest percentage of Americans with depression compared to 12% in Hawaii.

State of Women

Earlier this year, as Congress waited to confirm a new House speaker, children flooded the House floor – among them, the 4-month old son of Jimmy Gomez (D-CA). The image of the Congressman, standing in the House chambers, a baby strapped to his chest, garnered massive press coverage. It was unusual to see an infant on the House floor, but even more unusual to see a male legislator having to juggle work and child care responsibilities.

“We believe in the idea that my wife – or any woman – should not be the default parent,” Gomez said, advocating for paid family leave for both mothers and fathers. Among other dads on the Congressional floor was Joaquin Castro (D-TX), who discovered that the men’s bathroom in the House cloakroom doesn’t have a changing table.

According to our State of Women Report, conducted by The Harris Poll, 84% of women said “Men need to step up.” So, as we celebrate dads this weekend, let’s also continue to call on them to champion equity, support, and solidarity.

And PS…Remember #ShowUsYourLeave? We're getting ready to expand the conversation even further. Stay tuned for more next week.
