Good News, Bad News

The Story

US inflation is at its lowest rate since 2021.

That’s what I like to hear.

Yesterday, a new consumer price index (CPI) report showed that inflation cooled a bit last month. It only rose at a 4% annual rate — the slowest pace in two years. Lower gas and energy costs contributed to the drop in inflation, which was sitting at nearly 9% this time last year. Rent prices are also expected to cool off. It’s welcome news just in time for summer. However, before you go out and have fun in the sun, know that some things may still cost you a pretty penny.

Like what?

Groceries. Even though eggflation is on its way down, other supermarket goods have become more expensive. You may scream over the price of ice cream. Other items like bread and fresh fruits and veggies increased as well. Hotel rates are also feeling the heat for anyone planning a getaway, but at least airfare seems to be flying on cruise control. The mixed results on inflation have all eyes on the Federal Reserve as it meets today to decide whether to give interest rates another hike.

This latest CPI report could be a sign that the Fed’s hard work is starting to pay off. However, not everyone’s sold. Others say there’s still more that needs to be done before Americans' wallets finally see some relief.

And Also...This

Who was back in court…

Former President Trump. Yesterday, he pleaded not guilty to 37 criminal charges at a Miami federal courthouse. The indictment against Trump, who’s the first former US president to face federal charges, is over the mishandling of classified documents. He faces allegations of withholding national defense information and engaging in conspiracy to obstruct justice. Now, it could be months before Trump’s trial begins. Despite the charges and another looming trial, Trump isn’t slowing down his 2024 presidential campaign. Following his court appearance, he greeted supporters at a Cuban restaurant in Miami before flying to New Jersey for a speech.

Who people are mourning…

Tori Bowie. Yesterday, an autopsy report revealed the 32-year-old track star died from possible childbirth complications. Authorities said the three-time Olympic medalist, who was found dead last month, was eight months pregnant and in labor at the time of her death. An autopsy found that Bowie may have suffered from complications of eclampsia (a high blood pressure disorder) and had difficulty breathing before her death. Pregnant Black women face a higher risk of preeclampsia and eclampsia. They also have the highest maternal death rate in the US. Now, Bowie’s death is reigniting the conversation on how Black women are disproportionately impacted when it comes to maternal health care.

Who's not feeling heard...

Employees. Yesterday, a new poll found that employees worldwide are stressed and fighting with their bosses. The survey found that 59% of workers are not engaged and instead, quiet quitting. The survey also found that about 44% of workers suffer from “a lot” of stress. One solution? Employees say having their bosses engage with them and recognize their contributions is a start. Shocker.
