Uramichi Oniisan or Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan is a 13 episode anime series that started airing in July 2021.  Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan is based on the Japanese manga of the same name and Gaku Kuze created the series in 2017.  

This is a comedy anime or dares one would say, a dark comedy with intense high levels of sarcasm and pure entertainment.  What makes Uramichi Oniisan worth watching is a unique protagonist in the anime world. The life lessons shared by Uramichi Oniisan are really accurate and so relatable. As an adult or youth, you can relate to what Uramichi Oniisan is experiencing.

Plot

Meet Uramichi Oniisan from the children’s show “Together with Maman”. Uramichi Oniisan is a 31-year-old former gymnast who works in a children’s show in different segments with children. Uramichi Oniisan is jaded, mentally worn-out, and depressed yet presents his upbeat personality in a kid’s show.

The life lessons given by Uramichi Oniisan are noteworthy. Rather than sugarcoating adulthood with carefully pleasing and fabricating lies,  Uramichi Oniisan presents the harsh realities of working adults.  

Uramichi is a gym freak and gets triggered when anyone points out his hobby of muscle training or gym freak nature. His coworkers are Tobikichi Usahara, Mitsuo Kumatani, Iketeru Daga and Utano Tadano.

Usahara is a 28-year-old guy who plays the mascot of Usao (rabbit) in Together with Maman. He is not popular with kids or women and often gets drunk and whines about it.  Kumatani is a 28-year-old guy who works as a kuma mascot (bear) and is extremely popular with kids.

Iketeru Daga is a former musical actor who works in Together with Maman as singing oniisan and Jerminator. Utano is an elite music college graduate who has many work experiences under her belt ranging from an idol, enka singer and jazz singer. Her dream is to quickly get married.  

Usahara and Kumatani are Uramichi Oniisan’s kouhai. Uramichi Oniisan and Usahara don’t get along. He often badmouths Uramichi and as retaliation, Usahara gets punished/knocked out by his senpai.

Personality

Uramichi Oniisan has an upbeat personality, a cheerful disposition, and strong mental fortitude. He can easily switch his depressed face into a professional smiling face. Urmichi is extremely cynical and has a hard time keeping his sardonic comments around children.

While he’s cheerful and friendly in the show, in his personal life, Uramichi Oniisan is depressed. He’s struggling to get through his daily life and doesn’t joke. He holds grudges and in the anime, his indifference towards Usahara turned into anger.  

Does Uramichi have depression?

Uramichi Oniisan works as an instructor in “Together with Maman”. Throughout the show, Uramichi Oniisan reveals the plight of adulthood and working people. He’s professional although he’s extremely stressed and has depression. He indulges in drinking, smoking, and muscle training and often takes his frustration on his Kouhai, Usahara.

Uramichi faces an existential crisis and struggles in daily life to get by. Despite sharing his cynical and mocking views on adulthood, Uramichi Oniisan values kids and hopes they stay kind and sweet forever. In a sarcastic tone, he always expresses the difficulties of adulthood and working professionals. Uramichi Oniisan is an extremely depressed and miserable individual.  

Is Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan worth watching?

Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan is a highly recommended anime of 2021. Uramichi Oniisan is one to look out for. Often it feels like Uramichi Oniisan is talking directly to the viewers when he expresses his inner monologues. The Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan accurately expresses the hardships of adults and working people. Uramichi Oniisan’s existential crisis makes the anime worth watching.

He whines about life and yet at the same time is extremely professional and values kids. His professionalism can be seen when the cast of Together with Maman when to shoot a summer special at the beach in the middle of the winter.  They are freezing but complete their shoot without any complaints.

Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan has many gags and the dark humour makes the anime even more compelling. You’re bound to laugh with Uramichi Oniisan and can’t help but feel anxious when Usahara badmouths Uramichi Oniisan. He had it coming.

Uramichi’s mental health issues can be seen, yet he maintains a professional balance with his work and doesn’t trip. Barring Kumatani, nobody in Together with Maman is functional. They are all dysfunctional and mentally struggling in some way.

The interactions between them are hilarious and in some way, Uramichi Oniisan will teach you the way of life. Despite his negativity, he cares about children and his co-workers. It’s hilarious how Uramichi Oniisan always ends up with the most ridiculous and hilarious outfits in the show. Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan has a high watch value and is a good stress reliever; given you can handle dark humour and sarcasm.
