As you head into the last half of 2023, we pause to celebrate the 4th of July in the US and look back at the first six months. In case you missed them or just need a reminder, these 10 newsletter features really got The Tilt community’s interest. They range from collecting unpaid invoices to creating new products and running a business to moving from social platforms.

1. Quick to Sell Products (Jan. 6, 2023): You have an audience. You don’t have any content products to sell them. Follow the advice of digital strategist and Creator Economy Expo presenter Michelle Martello to hit the market with a content product within the month.

2. Pay Up (Jan. 24, 2023): When clients fail to pay based on your contract terms, your only legal recourse is to head to court. But before you do that, you can take steps to (hopefully) avoid that more time-intensive and costly route.

3. Road Taken (Jan. 27, 2023): Nora Dunn, aka The Professional Hobo, shares advice that works for digital nomads or never-leaving-my-home-office creators. All are based on Nora’s golden rule, “Set everything up so nothing can trip you up.”

4. Forwarding Address (Jan. 31, 2023): We often preach the need to move from rented land. But how do you build an “address book” so you can only inform your audience by a note posted on your rented door? Consider the sales technique known as “lead magnets.”

5. Never Assume (Feb. 17, 2023): You think you know why. You may be right, but should you take the chance? Survey results can help you learn not only more about your audience but they can help your audience learn more about themselves, their peers, and the topic of your content tilt.

6. Epic Redux (March 7, 2023): The first edition of Epic Content Marketing focused almost exclusively on content marketers at large institutions. The second edition of Epic Content Marketing had to be more inclusive of all content creation and distribution practitioners. It debuted in March.

7. Discover Me (April 14, 2023): While Google (and other smaller behemoths) control the algorithms to surface content on their search platforms, you can help things along. You should first know how Google values content. And that starts with this acronym – EEAT – Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust.

8. 2023 Survey of Content Entrepreneurs (May 2, 2023): In the 2023 Content Entrepreneur Benchmark Research, we gather data from content creators to truly understand the successful journey of a content entrepreneur. Your and your peers’ answers reveal what it takes to build a successful content business.

9. Most Valuable Content Product (May 12, 2023): Newsletters work well as content products because they serve both audience and the creator. You give your audience a reason to provide their contact information, limiting your reliance on faceless social media followers and fans. It also allows your audience to be regularly informed or entertained by your content business.

10. Side Hustles for Content Entrepreneurs (May 30, 2023): Peter Osborne sees an opportunity for expert creators to bring in revenue indirectly related to their content business – freelancing your content creation skills and topical expertise. Marketing and PR agencies need people like you.

  • Cam Anderson took up woodworking as a hobby when he was an EMT pilot to fill the time between his week-on, week-off schedule.
  • He opened a business selling his high-end furniture and turned to digital platforms to show off the business (even though he didn’t know what a hashtag was).
  • Today, Blacktail Studios is both a retail custom furniture business and a content business where Cam sells how-to content and more.

Why We Stan: Cam is a great entrepreneur. He turned his flair for high-end woodworking projects into a business and his talent for communicating how he does it into another business. We also like that he uses the same brand name for both ventures and uses what he learns from audience behavior in his content business to inform his retail business.

  • Non-live revenue: Creators on TikTok who sell LIVE subscription packages can now make non-live money. The platform rolled out subscriber-only video options. (Social Media Today)

  • Snap up: More than 4M customers now pay for Snapchat+, a year after the service launched the $3.99 service. (CNN Business)
    Tilt Take: That’s a big number, though a small fraction of the estimated 750M monthly active users.
  • GA4 world: Need help now that Google’s Universal Analytics is done? This resource page can help with setup, goals, users, ad links, and more. (Search Engine Journal)
    Tilt Take: Given the value of analytics, don’t wait another minute to set up your GA4.
Tech and Tools
  • Wind shifts: Twitter’s Elon Musk says unverified counts are limited to reading 1K posts a day, with newly unverified accounts limited to 500. Verified accounts can consume 10K posts a day. (Reuters)
    Tilt Take: Who knows what the count will be when you read this? But it definitely shows Elon, not the new CEO, remains in charge.
  • #AITok: TikTok’s AI Creative Assistant can illuminate the reasons for the best-performing ads and help create and refine ad scripts to be native on the platform. (Lindsey Gamble)
    Tilt Take: AI tools like these should be embraced given the value they provide.
And Finally
  • Silenced: Many OpenAI ChatGTP users, including paying subscribers, couldn’t log in for at least an hour last weekend. (Search Engine Journal)
    Tilt Take: Expect glitches to happen, but what happens if the glitch behind the scenes affects the content delivered? All AI-generated content needs to be fact-checked and attributed independently.
