Tony Bennett Dies

Grammy Award-winning singer Tony Bennett—whose career spanned eight decades—died Friday at 96, two weeks short of his birthday. The cause of death was not reported, though he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2016.

Born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in 1926 in Queens, New York, Bennett began singing at an early age after his mother encouraged him and his siblings to do so at home. In 1944, he was drafted into the US Army, fighting in World War II. He was discharged in 1946 and became a recording artist in 1949.

Bennett, who was influenced by icons like Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Billie Holiday, garnered 41 Grammy nominations over his career and won 19 awards. He collaborated with a range of stars, including Barbra Streisand, John Legend, Paul McCartney, and Carrie Underwood. His final public performance was in August 2021 for two sold-out concerts at Radio City Music Hall with Lady Gaga. Bennett was also inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame and received the United Nations "Citizen of the World" award.

Trial in Trump's classified documents case set for May 2024.

A federal judge pushed the criminal trial over former President Donald Trump's mishandling of classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate to May 20, 2024. The judge rejected Trump's request to delay the trial until after the 2024 presidential campaign but stopped short of accepting the government's proposed December trial.

The agreement will expire once Congress passes legislation to regulate AI.

Scientists observe cracked piece of metal heal itself.

Researchers at the US Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories and Texas A&M University found a microscopic crack—caused by repeated stress or motion and known as fatigue damage—eventually fused back together during a separate experiment involving repeated motions. If harnessed, the discovery could aid in creating self-healing machines and other metal structures.

Today, we're sharing a story from reader Bob M. in Costa Rica.

"The main fuse on my car blew, and the vehicle was dead on the road. It was around 11 am. After hitching a ride into town and getting tools and a replacement fuse, I got back to the car and realized I needed a 10mm socket. Two different people stopped and tried to help but did not have the socket. Just before dark another man drove by, then stopped and backed up to my car. I told him the problem and he quickly got the right tool and changed the fuse. When I tried to give him some money he waved, said, 'Pura vida and mucho gusto,' and we went on our ways home."
