Zuckerberg's Meta to End DEI Programs

Meta is ending its key diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, joining corporate giants Ford, McDonald's and Walmart that have pulled the plug on DEI initiatives.

Meta announced last week that it would stop third-party fact-checking of content on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who met with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Friday, said his company is "going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms."

The company will stop using the “Diverse Slate Approach,” a program that ensures a diverse set of candidates is considered for each open position, as well as its supplier diversity efforts, which were aimed at sourcing from diverse-owned businesses.

Sam Moore, "Soul Man" Singer, Dies at 89

Sam Moore, the voice of the 1960s duo Sam & Dave known for hits “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Comin,’” died on Saturday at 89 due to complications while recovering from surgery.

Moore, who was inducted with Dave Prater into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, influenced musicians like Michael Jackson, Al Green, and Bruce Springsteen.

“Soul Man” hit the charts again in the late 1970s when the Blues Brothers—John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd—recorded it with many of the same musicians as the original.

Moore’s influence was so great that his 2006 solo album was backed by a who’s who of music legends, including not only Springsteen, but Mariah Carey, Eric Clapton, Sting, Jon Bon Jovi, Steve Winwood, Wynona Judd, and Vince Gill.

Wildfire Death Toll Climbs

The death toll climbed to 16 in the Southern California wildfires on Saturday, and that number is expected to rise as cadaver dogs go through leveled neighborhoods. The massive Palisades fire now stretches to more than 21,500 acres and is only 11% contained. The Eaton Fire has expanded to more than 14,100 acres with 15% containment.

Winds shifted the fires on Saturday, prompting more evacuations as the Palisades fire edged toward the Brentwood neighborhood and San Fernando Valley foothills.

Meanwhile, more than 50,000 Los Angeles residents are demanding the ouster of mayor Karen Bass in a new petition, ripping her “gross mismanagement” of the disaster response.

Residents have begun returning to their homes, only to find debris and rubble in the densely populated, 25-mile expanse north of downtown Los Angeles.

Many residents were already facing hardship after State Farm dropped close to 1,600 policies in Pacific Palisades in July, reflecting a trend among private insurers to drop California policies or halt underwriting.
