Flow State - Tortoise
You’re on the free tier of Flow State. If you enjoy our work-friendly music recs, we also put out a two-hour mix every Tuesday and publish a daily Spotify playlist for paying subscribers. Unlock those features and support our work by subscribing to Flow State: Good morning. Today we’re listening to Tortoise, a post-rock band from Chicago. We first recommended them back in November 2019. Like their tracks, the band itself took shape step by step through unplanned intuition. In 1990, drummer John Herndon and bassist Doug McCombs invited fellow drummers and bassists to create their jammy, bottom-heavy debut LP, Tortoise.¹ Later in the decade, they brought in guitarists David Pajo and Jeff Parker, producing two genre-defining albums of post-rock. TNT from 1998 remains a Flow State favorite, with its winding, jazz-influenced improvisations and standout marimba-led track “Ten-Day Interval.” Millions Now Living Will Never Die from 1996 is more experimental, incorporating more electronic production. TNT - Tortoise (60m, basically no vocals) Millions Now Living Will Never Die - Tortoise (40m, vocal snippets on track 5) Have a great Thursday.
