A major annual survey on total charitable giving in the U.S. found that donations declined overall by the largest amount ever recorded.
Adjusted for inflation, giving declined last year by a whopping 10.5 percent. And donations from individuals fell even more, by a devastating 13.4 percent.
Unfortunately, The Intercept is not immune from this trend. Our fundraising is down — at a time when independent journalism is more necessary than ever. That’s why we urgently need readers like you to donate today to make it through these challenging times while continuing to expand and deepen our coverage.
If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
Every year since 1956, Giving USA has published a comprehensive report tallying the total amount of money donated to U.S. nonprofit organizations.
And in 67 years, they’ve never seen such a sharp year-over-year decline in charitable giving.
It’s not hard to understand what’s going on. With household incomes pinched by inflation, more and more people are pulling back on giving. We get it. We’re feeling the crunch as well.
But this is no time for investigative journalism to be cutting back or trimming our sails. American democracy is facing one of the greatest stress tests we’ve ever seen, as a former president runs to reclaim the White House while under indictment for his role in trying to steal the last election.
But as a nonprofit news outlet, we rely on donations as a key source of funding, and that’s why we must dig out of this hole as quickly as possible. With the incredible base of members who have stood with us over the years, we’re confident we’ll be able to do that. But now is the time when we need readers like you to chip in whatever you can.
Thank you,
