Tim Ferriss - 5-Bullet Friday — August 18, 2023

Hi All!
Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you.
This edition is brought to you by Eight Sleep. Be sure to see their offer in the P.S., and you all hit a home run in the P.P.S.
What I’m revisiting
“How To Be Successful,” 13 lessons on achieving outlier success written by Sam Altman (@sama), CEO of OpenAI. Here is one of the many paragraphs I highlighted for myself: “It’s useful to focus on adding another zero to whatever you define as your success metric—money, status, impact on the world, or whatever. I am willing to take as much time as needed between projects to find my next thing. But I always want it to be a project that, if successful, will make the rest of my career look like a footnote.”
Here is another: “I believe that it’s easier to do a hard startup than an easy startup. People want to be part of something exciting and feel that their work matters. If you are making progress on an important problem, you will have a constant tailwind of people wanting to help you. Let yourself grow more ambitious, and don’t be afraid to work on what you really want to work on.”
Interview I’m reading
“Legendary Author John McPhee on Procrastination, Dread, and His Endless Final Project.”
What I’m listening to
“Interstate Love Song” (Spotify, YouTube) by Stone Temple Pilots (@STPBand).
Device I’m still using weekly to save my back and neck
The Body Back Buddy, which was originally recommended to me by Dustin Moskovitz (@moskov), co-founder of Asana and Facebook. Here’s how Dustin answered my “best purchase for <$100?” question in Tribe of Mentors: “The Back Buddy by the Body Back Company is my favorite purchase from the past five years, bar none. Most basically, it allows you to administer self-massage anywhere on your back with the full leverage of two hands, but I’ve also really gotten to know and appreciate all the little knobs and other features over the years. I’ve even learned how to manipulate parts of my skeletal structure (i.e., self-chiropracty) and incorporate it into my yoga practice.”
Quote I’m pondering
“I’ve always thought that a big laugh is a really loud noise from the soul saying, ‘Ain’t that the truth!’”
— Quincy Jones

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my recent interview with co-founder and CEO of Asana Dustin Moskovitz, my conversation with comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld, and my interview with Unreasonable Success and How to Achieve It author Richard Koch.
And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.
Have a wonderful weekend, all.
Much love to you and yours,
Tim
P.S. Deal of the Week — Eight Sleep Pod Cover.
When it comes to sleep, heat is my nemesis. For decades I used to toss and turn, throw blankets off, pull them back on, and repeat ad nauseam. But a few years ago, I started using the Pod Cover, and it has transformed my sleep. The Pod Cover by Eight Sleep fits on any bed like a fitted sheet and improves your sleep with cooling technology that automatically adjusts the temperature on each side of the bed, based on your and your partner’s individual needs. It can cool down or warm up, monitoring and responding to your sleep phases and environment for your best night of sleep ever.
And thanks to the Pod Cover’s sleep and health tracking, you can wake up to a personalized sleep report each morning that provides key insights about how certain behaviors—like meditation or exercise—impact your sleep and overall health. Summer’s heating up, but your sleep doesn’t have to: cool your bed as low as 55º F with the Pod Cover. Eight Sleep is offering subscribers to 5-Bullet Friday $250 off(!) of the Pod 3 Cover. Click here to claim this deal and unlock your full potential through optimal sleep.
P.P.S. You all did it!
In a recent 5-Bullet Friday, I included a bullet about a campaign to help Indigenous peoples reclaim and protect their ancestral territories. Your donations quickly surpassed the $100,000 needed to trigger my Saisei Foundation and Paul Stamets’ matching donations of $50,000 each, eventually bringing the Amazon Conservation Team to its $320,000 goal in a matter of days. I’m extremely grateful for the incredible showing of generosity, and you should all be very proud. This is a major step toward restoring these sacred sites to their rightful stewards and protecting some of the world’s most biodiverse areas from deforestation, roadbuilding, and mining. Nicely done! 🙏
